Deus Necros

The shape ahead moved slowly through the snow.

At first, it looked like part of the mountain had broken free and learned to walk. It was enormous, easily taller than the ruined watchtowers Solania had abandoned along the northern ridges, with a body made of pale blue flesh veined in white ice. Frost clung to its shoulders in thick plates. Its arms hung long and heavy at its sides, knuckles nearly brushing the ground whenever it leaned forward. Each step sank deep into the snow and crushed the frozen crust beneath it with a dull, tired sound.

An ice giant.

Ludwig raised one hand, and the group stopped behind a ridge of stone.

No one spoke at first.

The giant was not marching. It was not hunting. It was not even walking in a clear direction. It moved in a loose circle across the open snowfield, stopping every few steps to look around with a strange, dazed confusion. Its head turned slowly from one side to the other. Once, it lifted a hand, as if reaching for something that was no longer there, then dropped it again with a low groan that rolled across the white ground.

The sound was not anger.

It sounded like pain.

Tull crouched beside Redd, his aura wrapped tight around his body against the cold. ”That thing alone could flatten a patrol squad.”

Redd’s nose twitched. ”It doesn’t smell like it’s looking for food.”

”What does a giant looking for food smell like?” Thomas whispered from near Ludwig’s shoulder.

”Worse.”

”Wonderful.”

Cain watched the giant without blinking. ”It is lost.”

Celine’s gaze narrowed. ”Or wounded.”

”Both,” Kaiser said, sounding more interested than concerned. ”Pain makes large creatures stupid. Loss makes them stupider.”

Ludwig kept his eyes on the giant.

It turned again, dragging one foot through the snow, then paused near a broken patch of ice. Its hands curled and uncurled. Another groan left it, weaker than the first. It took three steps forward, stopped, then turned back the way it came, as if whatever thought had driven it had failed before reaching completion.

Sloth’s residue clung to the air here.

Not enough to freeze them in place. Not enough to bend will into stillness. But enough to make movement feel slightly insulting. Enough that even wind had become lazy. The ice giant’s confusion might have been its own, or it might have been something left behind by the pale monster’s passage.

Ludwig lowered his hand. ”We go around.”

Tull looked relieved. ”Finally, a plan with no stabbing.”

”Don’t celebrate early,” Redd said.

Kaiser sighed. ”Avoiding an isolated specimen is wasteful.”

”It’s not hostile,” Ludwig said.

”Neither are books. I still open them.”

”You are not dissecting the lost ice giant.”

”You never let me have fun.”

Celine moved first, choosing a path along the ridge that kept them downwind and out of the open snowfield. Cain followed silently, then Redd, Tull, Thomas, Kaiser, and Ludwig. They moved slowly, careful not to dislodge stones or crunch through ice too loudly. The giant did not notice them, or if it did, it gave no sign. It kept circling, kept groaning, kept staring at empty snow as if searching for voices buried beneath it.

They left it behind.

The trail of Sloth’s army had become scarce, but not gone. The packed route still cut through the land in broad, crushed lines, though the number of corpses had thinned so much that they sometimes went nearly an hour before finding another abandoned body. The farther north they moved, the more the army’s passage looked less like a retreat and more like a path something enormous had carved through the world simply because it had no interest in moving around obstacles.

Then they found the reason the ice giant had been wandering.

The first corpse lay across a frozen depression, split from shoulder to hip.

It took Tull several seconds to understand what he was seeing because of the size. A severed arm as thick as a tree trunk lay thirty paces away, fingers curled into the snow. Blue-white blood soaked the ice around it, not yet fully covered by snowfall. The stain remained fresh enough that the edges glistened darkly beneath the gray sky.

Then they saw the others.

Several corpses of ice giants were scattered across the frozen ground.

Mangled.

Torn apart.

Ripped open and left in pieces.

One had been driven halfway through a stone outcrop, its skull cracked against black rock. Another lay facedown with its back torn open. A third had lost both legs, the stumps frozen jaggedly while its hands clawed deep furrows into the ground, as if it had tried to crawl away before something finished it. The snow around them was churned and broken, marked by the passage of many feet. Sloth’s army had crossed through here, and the ice giants had either tried to stop it or failed to move aside in time.

Redd’s expression darkened. ”This wasn’t a fight.”

Cain stepped over a frozen ridge of blood. ”No.”

Celine looked at the largest corpse. ”A massacre.”

Kaiser stood near one of the severed heads and studied the frozen face. ”Looks like this is the reason why that ice giant was out. It was looking for its kin.”

The words quieted the group.

Behind them, far away now, the wandering giant groaned again. This time, the sound felt different. Not random. Not merely pained.

Searching.

Ludwig stared at the torn bodies for a moment longer, then turned north.

”Keep moving.”

Tull looked at him. ”We’re just leaving?”

”Yes.”

”It was looking for them.”

”And we cannot give them back.”

No one had a good answer to that.

They continued.

The mountains began to change after the giant graveyard.

The cold dulled first.

Not vanished. Not fully. Snow still covered the ground, and ice still clung to the rocks, but the bite weakened with every mile. The wind, already sluggish, fell into long pauses between breaths. The sky remained dreary, but the world slowly stopped looking like it belonged entirely to winter. Patches of exposed earth appeared between stretches of ice. Then larger patches. Then broken runs of dark soil and stone where snow had melted or never settled.

The trail became muddier.

The corpses of Sloth’s army grew even fewer. One every hour became one every several. Then none for a long stretch. Only the path remained, a wide scar pressed into thawing earth by countless heavy feet. Whatever had survived to this point had been strong enough to continue, or important enough not to be left behind.

Tull stopped near a ridge where the snow finally gave way to black-brown ground.

He looked back.

Behind them, Solania’s mountains rose pale and cold beneath low clouds.

Ahead, the land spread into an uneven distance of dead grass, black mud, thin mist, and twisted growth.

”So,” Redd said, ”this is it?”

Cain’s gaze remained forward. ”Yes.”

Celine’s voice was quieter than usual. ”The border.”

Tull frowned. ”It doesn’t feel that dangerous to cross.”

Cain turned his head slightly. ”That is because the thing that made crossing impossible is dead.”

Ludwig looked at him.

Cain continued, ”In the past, no army could move through these ranges safely. Not from our side. Not from theirs. The Empire called it the Guardian of Solania.”

Kaiser smiled faintly. ”A polite name.”

Cain’s eyes shifted toward Ludwig. ”You called it the Wrathful Death.”

The group fell silent.

Ludwig looked back at the mountains.

Wrath.

Honest, brutal, endless Wrath.

Five years of fighting. Five years of destruction. Five years in a domain where rest was meaningless and survival was measured by how many times a body could be broken before it became boring. The Empire had known the result, not the truth. They had called it a guardian because it stopped whatever waited beyond the mountains from crossing. They had never understood that the guardian had been a monster in its own right.

”It killed anyone that crossed its domain,” Cain said. ”Human scouts. Beast packs. Dark continent raiders. Things worse than both. And it also made sure Sloth’s army never crossed.”

Redd looked north with new discomfort. ”So you killed the guard dog.”

Ludwig’s mouth twitched. ”Apparently.”

Tull exhaled slowly. ”That would have been nice to know before we stepped over the line.”

”It would not change anything,” Celine said.

They crossed the border.

There was no grand sensation.

No barrier.

No roar.

No immediate army waiting on the other side.

Only the land changing beneath their feet and the quiet knowledge that the thing once preventing movement between worlds of violence was gone.

The Dark Continent began poorly.

Not with fire.

Not with hordes.

With wrongness.

The first trees they saw should have been dead. Their bark was dry and cracked, split open in places like old bone, but small leaves clung to their branches, dark green and glossy. Some roots dipped into stagnant water that had no smell. Pools sat unmoving between the trees, black and mirror-still, yet without the rot such water should have carried. Swamps spread in patches across the low ground, reeds growing pale at the tips, insects skimming over surfaces that reflected no sky.

Animals watched them.

That was another surprise.

Not many, but enough.

Vulture-like creatures perched on dead branches, large and hunched, with hooked beaks and too many folds of skin around their necks. Their eyes followed the group with lazy intelligence, but they did not swoop down. Smaller beasts slipped through the mud, scaled things with narrow backs and clawed feet that immediately dug into the earth when noticed, hiding themselves in burrows with astonishing speed. Something long and pale moved beneath the surface of a stagnant pool, then disappeared without disturbing the water.

None attacked.

That made Tull more nervous than if they had.

”I do not like polite monsters,” he said.

Redd sniffed the air carefully. ”They’re not hungry.”

”Everything is hungry.”

”Not enough to try us.”

Kaiser walked with his hands behind his back, looking around like a scholar visiting a library that had murdered the last six students. ”Fascinating. The ecosystem adapted around avoidance, not aggression.”

Redd glanced at him. ”Meaning?”

”Meaning everything here knows something larger owns violence.”

The group kept moving.

The open quagmires gradually gave way to denser growth. Trees became more common, their dry-living branches knitting overhead in uneven patterns. Mud swallowed more of the path, though Sloth’s army had left such a heavy trail that following it required little guesswork. The army had stomped the ground flat in a wide line, crushing reeds, grass, roots, and shallow burrows. Where water had stood, it was pushed aside into dark trenches. Where trees had blocked the way, they had been broken or uprooted.

The corpses were gone now.

But the army’s path remained.

A road made by weight and indifference.

Ludwig walked near the front, Durandal still sheathed but within easy reach. The hostile quiet pressed against the edges of his senses. Not like Sloth. Not exactly. This was not inertia. This was attention from a place that had not yet decided whether they were worth disturbing.

[You’re in a hostile environment.]

Ludwig stopped.

The blade rang softly as he pulled it out, and the entire group reacted. Celine’s weapon flashed into her hand. Redd lowered his stance. Tull’s aura surged around him like a shield of pale pressure. Kaiser smiled, red finger twitching once. Thomas darted upward, ember wings brightening. Cain did not draw a weapon.

He did not need to.

The dart came from the trees ahead.

Fast.

Silent until the last instant.

It flew straight for Ludwig’s head.

Cain’s hand moved.

Two fingers closed around the dart inches from Ludwig’s temple.

The motion was so calm that the attack looked embarrassing afterward.

Everyone stared at the dart.

It was not crude.

That was the first problem.

The shaft was narrow, balanced, and made from dark treated wood. The tip was steel, triangular and polished, with a shallow groove along one side where some faint green residue clung. The fletching was not feather but a thin strip of cured membrane bound with fine black thread. Whoever had made it understood weight, flight, and killing angles.

Tull stepped closer. ”That is crafted.”

Redd’s nostrils flared. ”Poisoned too.”

Kaiser leaned in. ”Not badly made either.”

Ludwig looked toward the direction it had come from.

Something moved in the bushes.

A shadow pulled back between dry-living trees.

Then it ran.

Not on four legs.

Two.

Fast, but not beast-fast. Controlled. Upright. A figure wrapped in dark cloth and mud-colored layers, disappearing deeper into the forest with the practiced urgency of someone retreating after a failed shot.

Redd stared after it.

His expression changed.

”That’s...”

Ludwig looked at him. ”What?”

Redd’s ears twitched once, disbelief crossing his face.

”That’s a human,” he said.

The words landed harder than the dart.

Tull turned sharply. ”A human?”

Redd nodded, still staring into the trees. ”Scent is wrong from the mud and swamp, but underneath it? Human. No beast blood. No giant. No monster musk.”

Cain looked toward the forest.

Celine’s expression tightened.

Kaiser’s smile widened, slow and delighted.

”Well,” the former lich said. ”That makes this place much more interesting.”

Ludwig looked at the path where the figure had vanished.

The Dark Continent was not empty.

The Nharuk had proved that much.

But a human with a steel dart, poison, and enough skill to hide in these woods meant something else entirely.

Someone lived here.

Someone made weapons.

Someone saw strangers from Solania and chose to shoot first.

Ludwig lifted Durandal, eyes narrowing toward the trees.

”Redd,” he said.

”Already tracking.”

Tull swallowed hard and adjusted his grip on his weapon. ”Please tell me we are not chasing the first person we meet in the Dark Continent after they tried to put a dart in your head.”

Ludwig stepped forward.

”We are going to ask why.”
