Deus Necros

Snow hung in the air. Drops of black water thrown up by the broken ice froze mid-arc. Van Dijk’s sludge spears remained suspended like sculptures of tar. Dark bullets from the Tower Masters halted inches from their targets, their black trails caught behind them. The undead army froze with weapons raised. Gale stood with Oathcarver halfway through a swing, the blade buried in a servant of Sloth that no longer had the privilege of finishing its collapse.

Only Ludwig remained aware enough to understand the horror of it.

The pressure of Sloth’s authority no longer felt like sleep. It felt like the refusal of existence itself to continue. Movement was effort. Breath was effort. Thought was effort. The battlefield had been ordered to stop, and the world, exhausted by the suggestion, obeyed.

Sloth stepped from the throne onto the surface of the black water.

One foot.

Then another.

Each motion looked agonizingly slow, not because time had stopped, but because he hated needing to spend even that much effort. His body was immense now that he stood, taller than most giants, long-limbed and terribly thin beneath the draped cloth around him. He did not radiate power the way Pride had. He did not burn with wrath like Morde’Xander. He did not distort greed or hunger or envy.

He simply made everything feel pointless.

He looked at Ludwig.

”You make me move,” Sloth said.

The words crawled across the stopped battlefield.

”I dislike you.”

Ludwig’s hands tightened around Joana and Celine.

Nightbreaker trembled nearby, still in his grasp but slowed by the same authority pressing over the world. Noctivex groaned against him, living metal resisting the command to stillness with the stubbornness of something that had once answered Wrath. The Lantern burned quietly at his soul, the Death Point waiting like a knife hidden under a pillow.

Ludwig’s eyes narrowed beneath the visor.

”Yeah?” he forced out. ”Join the line.”

Sloth raised one hand.

Not quickly. Not dramatically. Just enough. Just enough for it to matter, for it to count as an action by something that denies action.

And every servant of Sloth across the field turned their still faces toward Ludwig at once.

For a breath, the living battlefield forgot how to move.

The pressure did not strike like a spell. There was no visible wave, no circle of magic, no chant, no mana pattern the Tower Masters could interrupt. Sloth simply stood, and the world of the living recoiled from action. Paladins dropped to their knees with swords still half-raised. Priests slumped mid-prayer, mouths open, holy words drying on their tongues before becoming sound. Soldiers leaned on spears as if they had carried them for a hundred years. Mages stared at their own hands with dull confusion, unable to remember why shaping mana had mattered a moment ago.

Even Hiro fell.

The Hero of the Holy Order, the shining blade meant to stand against calamity, could not even lift his sword. He trembled on one knee, teeth clenched, eyes wide and furious, but no amount of shame made his body rise. Sloth did not crush him. It did something worse. It made standing feel unnecessary. It made resistance feel like a child’s tantrum thrown against the final shape of the world.

The Tower Masters endured better, but not cleanly. The Red Tower Master’s fireless destruction flickered and died around his staff. The White Tower Master’s dark bullets remained half-formed in the air before unraveling into smoke. The Blue Tower Master lowered one hand to the ice, fingers digging into it as if the cold pain could remind her body to obey. Van Dijk remained standing, but only because the Black Tower Master had long ago learned that dignity could be used like a weapon. His eyes stayed fixed on Celine, now in Ludwig’s grasp, and that coldness held him where strength alone might have failed.

But the dead did not stop.

Gale’s Oathcarver fell.

The blade completed its swing and split a servant of Sloth apart from shoulder to hip. Around him, the undead army continued its advance in total silence. Skeletons thrust spears. Hollow corpses dragged themselves over broken ice. Undead archers on the walls of the Necropolitis loosed arrows into the horde. Lowly dead mages in their cracked towers released dark shards with the same mindless obedience as before. The Necropolitis did not hesitate, because it had no fear to still, no hunger to dull, no exhaustion to invite.

Never Hunger.

Never Tire.

Never Fear.

Sloth’s authority passed over the dead and found nothing worth holding.

Ludwig felt that truth through the battlefield even as Sloth’s pressure pressed against him. He was not dead in the same clean way Gale was. His body was a Living Vessel, wrapped in flesh, carrying nerves, breath, fatigue, memory, anger, and all the ugly little pieces of existence Sloth could reach. The pressure crawled through those pieces and whispered that he had done enough.

He had rescued Celine.

He had rescued Joana.

The Necropolitis was fighting.

The undead were immune.

Why keep carrying this?

Why keep standing between the world and every disaster that crawled out of the dark?

Ludwig’s grip on Nightbreaker loosened by a hair.

The Crown of Pride moved.

Not physically. Not in any way a normal eye could perceive. Yet within him, above him, around the declaration he had once carved into reality, something golden and merciless tilted its head. Pride did not comfort. Pride did not encourage. Pride did not tell him he could win.

Pride stated fact.

Ludwig’s mouth opened.

The words were not entirely his, and because of that, they were more dangerous.

”I deny stillness!”

The battlefield shivered.

The statement was not hope. It was not courage. It was not even defiance in the ordinary sense. It was a fact declared by Pride and chained to Ludwig’s existence the same way I am Strong had been. A second binding. A second blade. One that did not promise victory, happiness, salvation, or meaning.

Sloth told the living that action had no worth.

Pride answered that Ludwig acted regardless.

The pressure on his limbs cracked.

Not vanished. Not entirely. Sloth was too vast and too close for that. But it no longer settled properly inside him. It could whisper that motion was meaningless, and Ludwig could hear it, understand it, even agree with parts of it. Yet his body moved anyway, because his truth had become heavier than the invitation to rest.

Sloth’s half-lidded eyes settled on him.

He did not grow angry. Anger was effort. Irritation was nearly too much. Still, something like distaste crossed his face, faint and slow, like a ripple moving across stagnant water.

”You bind yourself too eagerly,” Sloth said.

”Better than rotting comfortably,” Ludwig replied.

The dead continued killing around them.

Then light erupted from beyond Solania.

It did not charge blindly into the Necropolitis. It did not fall upon the undead like judgment. It came rising from the city itself, brilliant and controlled, a figure wrapped in holy radiance that tore through the suffocating aura around the living without breaking the dead city’s dominion. Titania emerged from the direction of the Sacrosanctum, glowing with the power of her four patron gods, her hair and robes lifting in a wind made from divine pressure.

Then she stopped.

That single act separated her from every foolish paladin on the field.

She saw the Necropolitis first, its black walls and blue soul flames spread in front of the holy city like a blasphemy too useful to condemn. She saw the undead army marching without fear, holding back the deformed servants of Sloth while living soldiers could barely keep their knees under them. She saw Gale, towering and silent. She saw Kaiser, staff planted, face cold. She saw Ludwig, monstrous in Noctivex, standing before Sloth with Nightbreaker in hand. She saw the horde, the swamp, the fallen clergy, the useless Hero, and the two wounded women in Ludwig’s grasp.

Titania did not move forward.

She pulled out a communication crystal.

A moment later, Ludwig’s own crystal pulsed.

He answered without looking away from Sloth.

”What’s going on?” Titania asked.

”Big bad guy,” Ludwig said. ”Don’t use holy power. I’m keeping him at bay.”

There was a short silence.

That was all Titania needed.

”Understood,” she said.

No sermon. No outrage. No question about why undead protected Solania. No demand that the Necropolitis be removed. Titania turned her attention behind the line instead, toward the living too weak to stand. Her divine power spread carefully, not as a blast, not as a holy assault, but as support. Relief. Stabilization. She did not push against the Necropolitis. She did not burn the dead. She gave the humans enough breath to remain conscious, enough strength not to collapse fully, enough protection that Sloth’s weight would not simply smother them where they knelt.

Mot moved as well.

He was one of the few living figures untouched in any meaningful way. His connection to the Outer God sat around him like a veil from some place Sloth’s authority had no simple language for. Titania moved through patron gods. Mot moved through something else entirely. Together, they became the only two bright points among the living who could still act freely while the rest of the battlefield drowned in stillness.

Ludwig lowered Joana and Celine toward two undead soldiers that had approached without order needing to be spoken.

”Take them to Titania,” he said. ”She’ll heal them.”

The undead obeyed.

They received the women with careful hands that looked absurd attached to bodies made for war. One lifted Joana. The other carried Celine. Van Dijk’s eyes followed his sister the entire way, and the black swamp around him grew sharper, more murderous, as if every inch of distance between her and danger was being paid for with slaughter.

Ludwig took one step forward.

Sloth moved as well.

It was a terrible thing to watch. Not because he was fast, but because every motion felt like an event the world resented having to contain. He stepped off the black water and onto the broken ice. His immense body straightened fully now, long-limbed and giant-sized, white of skin like that of snow, and without clothes nor gentiles. He was similar to pride in a sense, but this one lacked facial expression. Or a face to even have expression, he had three eyes all appearing on atop the other on the left side of his face. No mouth, no nose, no lips or ears or hair. His body however looked like carved statues of an ancient Greek god.

It wore nothing, even armor would have been too much commitment. He came forward slowly, and every servant of Sloth near him lowered its head.

Ludwig met him halfway.

They stood face to face.
