Dawn Experiment

#Day 33 — 10:15

The lower deck had become a war zone.

Three dozen women pressed against the security line, their faces twisted with rage, their eyes glazed with the aphrodisiac that still burned in their veins. They carried whatever they could find—brooms, pots, a fire extinguisher someone had torn from the wall—and they hurled them at the shields with a fury that should have been impossible for bodies so depleted.

Victoria stood behind the line, her gas mask hanging at her side, her eyes scanning the crowd. Around her, her team had their masks on, their breathing heavy through the filters. The shields held. The batons held. But the women kept coming.

A pot struck a guard’s helmet. The woman staggered, caught herself, pushed back. A broom handle snapped against a shield. Someone threw a shoe.

”Hold the line!” Maggie shouted, her voice muffled behind her mask.

Victoria watched the mass of bodies surge forward, felt the guards beside her brace, push back. They were trained for this—crowd control, riot suppression. But these were not enemies. These were her crew. Her people.

If they were the enemy, she thought, it would be easier.

She keyed her comms. ”Iqbal. It’s now or never.”

A pause. Then Iqbal’s voice, calm and steady. ”Acknowledged.”

Seconds later, the vents hissed.

The gas was pale gray, almost invisible, but its smell was unmistakable—sharp, chemical, cloying. It billowed from the overhead vents, rolled across the ceiling, and settled over the crowd like a fog.

The protesters coughed. Their eyes watered. Their shouts turned to gasps.

One woman fell. Then another. Then a dozen.

Within a minute, the lower deck was silent. Bodies lay stacked on top of each other, arms and legs tangled, faces slack. The gas dissipated, and the only sound was the hum of the ship’s engines and the ragged breathing of the security team.

Maggie lowered her shield, pulled off her mask. ”Move Alexis to the sub. The rest of you, start carrying them down. One at a time. Don’t hurt them.”

The guards moved. Victoria stayed where she was, her eyes moving across the faces of the fallen women. Searching.

Sabine was not among them.

She remembered the smile—small, satisfied, the smile of someone who had already planned her next move. Sabine had stepped back into the shadows when Victoria arrested Alexis. She had not followed. She had not protested.

Where is she?

Victoria’s eyes widened. She turned and ran.

#Day 33 — 10:22

The bridge was quiet when the call came.

Vivienne stood at the forward windows, her hands on the rail, her eyes on the horizon where the Mother Mercy was already turning, its sails catching the wind, its hull beginning to pull away from the Blue Oasis. Sophie stood beside her, her arms crossed, her face unreadable.

Emeka’s voice came through the comms, crackling with static. ”Captain. We are breaking off as ordered. May God protect you.”

Vivienne pressed the transmit button. ”Stay safe, Emeka. We’ll find you when this is over.”

The line went dead.

Sophie’s voice was quiet. ”Do you trust her so much? Chen? That you would risk the entire ship?”

Vivienne did not answer immediately. She watched the Mother Mercy grow smaller on the horizon, a dark speck against the gray water.

”Arresting Alexis means the ship will never be the same,” Sophie continued. ”Do you understand the consequences?”

Vivienne turned to face her. ”You were the one who told me to lock her up. You warned me about her from the beginning. Now you’re questioning me for doing what you wanted?”

Sophie shook her head slowly. ”If you had never released her, the riot would not have happened. The crew would not have tasted the aphrodisiac. They would not be tearing each other apart.”

Vivienne looked back at the Mother Mercy. It was smaller now, its sails dark against the clouds.

”Alexis was released to save the fishermen,” she said. ”They are alive because of her. And now they are breaking off, sailing into the cold, and my crew is at each other’s throats.” She paused. ”Was it worth it?”

Sophie did not answer.

Vivienne straightened. ”I trust Chen. Her methods are unorthodox. Mysterious. But we will survive.”

”At what cost?” Sophie asked.

Vivienne opened her mouth to answer—

And felt a presence at her back.

She turned.

Sabine was lunging at her, a knife in her hand, her face contorted with rage.

Time seemed to slow. Vivienne saw the blade, saw the arc of Sabine’s arm, saw her mother’s body moving before she could think. Sophie shoved Vivienne aside, and the knife sank into her back shoulder instead of Vivienne’s chest.

Sophie cried out, stumbled, fell to her knees.

Sabine yanked the knife free, blood spraying across the polished floor. She lunged again, but Sophie grabbed her leg, held her in place. Sabine kicked—once, twice—and Sophie’s head struck the deck. Her eyes rolled back, and she went limp.

Linh was there, her hands reaching for Sabine, trying to pull her away. Sabine threw her aside like a rag doll. Linh’s head cracked against a console panel, and she slumped to the floor.

Then Sabine was on Vivienne.

Vivienne caught her wrist, stopped the knife an inch from her face. The blade trembled between them, the edge catching the light. Sabine was stronger than she looked—stronger than she should have been—and the knife inched closer.

Vivienne’s arms burned. Her hands were slick with blood—Sophie’s blood, or her own, she could not tell. The knife moved closer. Closer.

I’m going to die, she thought. On my own bridge. By a Commission agent’s blade.

Then the knife stopped.

Victoria’s combat knife drove through Sabine’s skull from the side.

The blade entered just above the ear, punched through bone, and emerged in a spray of blood and tissue. Sabine’s body went rigid, her mouth opening in a silent scream. Victoria grabbed her hair, yanked the knife free, and drove it down through the back of Sabine’s skull—through the spine, through the throat, until the tip burst out through her open mouth.

Blood sprayed across the bridge.

Sabine’s corpse collapsed, twitching, her eyes still open, her mouth still frozen in that silent scream.

Victoria grabbed Vivienne’s arm, pulled her to her feet. ”Are you okay?”

Vivienne did not answer. Her eyes were on her mother.

Sophie lay in a pool of blood, her face pale, her breathing shallow and uneven. Her eyes were open but unfocused, staring at nothing. A dark bruise was already forming on her temple where her head had struck the deck. She did not move. She did not speak.

”Mom.” Vivienne dropped to her knees, pressed her hands against the wound in Sophie’s shoulder. Blood welled between her fingers, hot and slick. ”Mom, can you hear me?”

Sophie’s eyes moved, just a fraction, toward the sound of her daughter’s voice. Her lips parted, but no words came. Only a slow, shallow breath.

Vivienne looked at the wound, at the blood spreading across the white fabric of Sophie’s blouse, at the way her mother’s body had twisted when she fell—thrown herself—between Vivienne and the blade.

She didn’t hesitate.

All the years of coldness, of manipulation, of secrets kept and lies told. All the times Vivienne had wondered if her mother was capable of love, or only of control. And when the knife came, Sophie had moved without thinking. Not calculating. Not strategizing. Just—moving.

She loves me, Vivienne thought. She always did. She just didn’t know how to show it.

”Mom, you’re going to be okay.” Vivienne’s voice cracked. ”You hear me? You’re going to be okay.”

Sophie’s hand twitched. Her fingers found Vivienne’s wrist, held on—weak, trembling, but holding.

Victoria was already on the comms. ”Iqbal, we need medical on the bridge. Now. Captain’s mother is down. Stab wound to the shoulder, possible concussion.”

Linh groaned, pushed herself up from the floor. Her hand went to her head, came away red. ”What—”

”Stay down,” Victoria ordered. ”You’re bleeding.”

Linh blinked, swayed, and sat back against the console.

Vivienne pressed harder on Sophie’s wound. The blood was slowing, but not enough. Not nearly enough.

”Stay with me,” she whispered. ”Please. I can’t—I can’t lose you. Not now. Not like this.”

Sophie’s eyes fluttered. For a moment, they focused—really focused—on Vivienne’s face. Her lips moved again, forming a word that Vivienne could not hear.

Then her eyes closed, and her hand went limp.

”Mom!” Vivienne’s voice rose to a scream. ”Mom! No—stay with me—”

Victoria was beside her, checking Sophie’s pulse, her breathing. ”She’s alive. Unconscious, but alive.” She looked at Vivienne. ”You saved her. You stopped the bleeding.”

Vivienne stared at her mother’s face—pale, slack, but still breathing. Still alive.

She took a knife for me, she thought. After everything. She took a knife for me.

The doors to the bridge burst open. Iqbal rushed in, Saanvi behind her, a medical kit in her hands. They knelt beside Sophie, working quickly, efficiently, cutting away the blood-soaked fabric, packing the wound, starting an IV.

Vivienne sat back on her heels, her hands red with her mother’s blood, and watched.

Victoria put a hand on her shoulder. ”She’s tough. She’ll make it.”

Vivienne nodded. She could not speak.

Behind her, Sabine’s body lay in a widening pool of blood, her eyes still open, her mouth frozen in that silent scream. The bridge was chaos—Linh bleeding, Sophie unconscious, the consoles spattered with red.

But the ship was still moving. The plan was still in motion.

And somewhere out there, Carmona was coming.

Vivienne looked at her bloody hands, then at her mother’s face, and she made a silent promise.

I will not let your sacrifice be wasted.

She stood, turned to Victoria. ”Get Linh to medical. Secure the bridge. And find out where Carmona is.”

Victoria nodded. ”Yes, Captain.”

Vivienne looked at Sophie one last time, then walked to the forward windows. The Mother Mercy was gone. The sea was gray and empty.

The storm was coming.

She touched the glass, left a bloody print, and waited.
