Dawn Experiment

# Day 16 - 22:14

The blackout didn’t last long. A second, maybe two—then the emergency LEDs snapped back, flooding the corridor in electric blue and raw, surgical white. The scream of metal on metal faded. For an instant, every sound in the world was the ragged, animal gasp of seventy four people caught midfall.

Sophie Laurent had never liked crowds. She studied them. Cataloged their patterns and weak points, the way a mathematician tracked the collapse of a building before the first brick was even dislodged. But she despised the smell of them—panic, sweat, the chemical tang of old perfume burning under stress. So now, in this sub’s sealed pressure hull, when the panic rippled through the air in visible, almost liquid waves, Sophie did not retreat. She leaned forward, eyes fixed on the mob, cataloguing its shape as it absorbed the trauma.

The survivors peeled themselves off the floor and the wall. The ones closest to the ceiling grunted as they crashed back down; the rest just slid in heaps along the narrow corridor. Someone had wet herself, and the ammonia stung, burning away any last fantasy of dignity. Several women bled from noses or split lips, and the nurse at the fore end of the compartment had to catch herself on a stanchion to avoid being trampled by the four bodies that rolled her way. All the while, the emergency lighting cast everyone’s shadows in harsh relief—a painting in blue and blood and the white of exposed teeth.

Sophie let the confusion settle before she did anything. She preferred it that way.

The survivors in the aft section were pinned, maybe twenty meters from the bow, by a pair of pressure bulkheads. The only passage forward was the main walkway, packed shoulder-to-shoulder, and there, in the spillover, was where most of the action would be.

Someone started to scream, high-pitched and rhythmic, then cut herself off with a sharp gasp as Linh Hoa Pham bellowed for silence from the navigation module up front. “Everyone down! On the floor! Do not move until the motion stops!” Linh’s voice had the effect of a cattle prod, and, one by one, the group complied, bodies huddling and then freezing in place.

The sub continued its mad descent, but after a few seconds the motion stabilized. No more bone-shaking vibration; just the soft pulse of the pumps, and the odd musical note as the hull flexed. The crowd began to breathe again.

A speaker crackled overhead. AURA’s voice, ice-cold and honey smooth, filled the chamber: “Apologies for the abrupt launch. Magnetic clamp failure. Life support is nominal. Secure all loose objects. Proceed to a designated seat or harness. You are now at safe depth.”

Safe, Sophie thought, was a lie. But she appreciated the gesture.

She let her gaze drift down the corridor, past the huddle of bruised crew and towards the two stasis pods set into the starboard wall. The glass of each was beaded with condensation; inside, the women floated, pale and perfect, one with hair a cloud of gold, the other a deeper brown. The first pod was labeled OASIS, the second VICTORIA.

Both “sleepers” had the same dimensions as their living counterparts. Sophie watched as Vivienne Laurent’s face crumpled, the first real break in her composure since the quarantine began. Vivienne stared at the OASIS pod, eyes flicking between her own reflection and the sleeping copy, and for a split second, Sophie saw her daughter as the trembling child she’d been, lost in the dark at age five, too proud to cry but helpless all the same.

Vivienne turned away, covering her mouth. Mei-Lin Zhou reached out, but Vivienne shrugged her off and instead locked eyes with Sophie, demanding an explanation. Sophie ignored her.

She stepped over two prone bodies, careful not to catch her heel on a stray hand, and made her way to the forward control panel where Linh hunched, already hands-deep in dials and levers.

“Damage?” Sophie asked, voice low.

Linh didn’t look up. “No hull breach. AURA locked out manual as soon as the clamps failed. We’re on full AI protocol.” She stabbed at a display with her knuckle. “See? Not even diagnostic access.”

Sophie watched the status bar crawl across the touch screen. “Speed?”

“Optimal. We’re at one thousand meters. She’s making for open ocean.” Linh’s voice was calm, but there was sweat on her lip. “You planned for this?”

Sophie smiled. “I planned for everything.”

She looked at the far wall, where a panel showed three names and three indicator lights: VERNE, MAGGIE, and VICTORIA. Each glowed green.

The crowd pressed forward. The two security officers nearest the control panel, still in battered uniforms, tried to keep a corridor clear, but the crush was too much. Faces glimmered with hope, or terror, or the vacant numbness of those too tired to care. Sophie saw the fear, the calculation. She recognized several women from the decks—one of the kitchen staff, the junior comms operator, a couple of former “guests” of the owner who had learned to keep their heads down.

Isabelle Grant appeared at the edge of the group, her suit torn at the sleeve, but the line of her jaw was as sharp as ever. She found Sophie and spat: “What are you waiting for? Are we abandoned?”

Sophie turned, making eye contact with each woman she recognized from the Laurent programs. “You are not abandoned,” she said, pitching her voice to carry. “You are in a survival compartment. Automated and self-contained.”

Grant advanced, her face red, breath hissing through clenched teeth. “You said the bow chamber was safe. Was this your real plan all along? Send us into the abyss and hope for rescue?”

Sophie didn’t blink. “There is no rescue. There is only completion of the mission.”

That shut Grant up, for a moment. But it started a ripple down the corridor—questions, demands, growing louder.

“What mission?” shouted a voice.

“You owe us answers!” someone else, near the midline.

Sophie let the pressure build, then raised a hand. It went quiet fast.

“You have all heard the word ‘key’ before,” she said, calm and clinical. “Some of you were trained to watch for it. Some of you became the key, or failed the test. It is time to explain.”

There was a weird hush, as if the hull itself had started to listen.

Sophie paced a line just ahead of the main crowd. “You know the myth of the Ark? That a few are chosen to survive, to remake the world?” She gestured at the blue-lit corridor, at the pods, at the mass of faces. “But what if the Ark wasn’t just a container? What if it was a race—a test to see who could unlock the future first?”

She let the words settle.

“All Vector ships, all of them, were given two genetic keys—identical twins, one on ice, one alive. The live one received the treatments, the exposures, the mutations. The copy, the ‘sleeper,’ was preserved as the code original. If the ship lost its Vector, the program triggered evacuation. The surviving crew would bring the sleeper to a safe zone, then wait for recovery.”

Another voice, high and raw: “Why? What does it do?”

Sophie smiled, sharklike. “Because when all twenty-four keys are brought together, the master protocol unlocks. The virus stops. The world can breed again.”

She let the silence fill every rib, every ear canal. She saw the dawning horror as the realization crept in: that their whole existence, the weeks of torture and effort, the deaths and the betrayals, had been a scavenger hunt. That they were not saving the world. They were racing against other Arks, each with its own hope, its own despair.

“That’s not possible,” muttered someone at the back.

Sophie raised her chin. “The old world is gone. This is all that remains. If you wish for children, for a future—this is how you win it.”

Linh’s voice was abrupt. ”You didn’t mention what happens if the last Vector dies before another ship can recover the key.”

Sophie glanced at the status panel. Still three green. ”Then the stasis pod ejects automatically. It has a beacon that activates on contact with seawater.” Her fingers traced the edge of the control panel. ”Like sharks to blood, every Vector ship within five hundred miles will come hunting. First to reach it claims the prize.”

Kim barked a bitter laugh. “You’re saying we’re in a fucking game show?”

Sophie shrugged, unbothered. “Would you rather the alternative? The world without end?”

As she spoke, a junior officer at the edge of the display started moaning. Her hands shook violently. Saanvi, the doctor, elbowed through and caught the girl as her knees buckled. The officer’s skin had gone waxy gray, her pupils dilated to black pools. Saanvi pressed two fingers against her neck, then barked orders. Someone passed forward a crash kit. The women nearest made space, their faces rigid with the effort not to look directly at what might be their future.

On the main panel, the name ”VERNE” flicked from green to yellow.

Sophie felt her pulse rise—not from fear, but from the perfection of the design. ”Prepare yourselves,” she called, her voice slicing through the tension. ”This is only the beginning. The program will not stop for sentiment.”

Linh’s hands flew over the controls. She tried a manual override, but AURA’s cold voice returned: “Lockdown confirmed. Unauthorized attempts will result in termination of privileges.”

A second body went down. The indicator for MAGGIE switched to yellow.

Aida, crouched by the wall, tried to comfort a group of sobbing survivors. “It’s going to be all right,” she lied, but nobody believed her. A third body hit the floor, this time just a few meters from Sophie’s feet.

This time, the crowd started to move—half pressing forward, half pulling back, as if a vector had split the group along a mathematical fault line.

On the panel, “VICTORIA” flickered. Yellow. Then red.

Sophie watched the pulse line flatten, and for a split second, she wondered if she should mourn. She decided not to.

The corridor was a riot of panic now—shouts, someone retching, a few trying to claw their way back up the ladder that was now retracted and sealed. Aida and Mei-Lin moved through the chaos, trying to keep people calm, but it was hopeless.

A burst of static from the wall speaker. “New protocol,” AURA intoned. “Life support resources are limited. All personnel must proceed to their designated stations. Noncompliance will result in escalation.”

Sophie had seen this before, in simulations. She knew the stages. The next was violence, then a long, suffocating despair.

She let her voice ring out one more time, cutting through the screams: “This is not the end. We are the survivors. You are the chosen. Remember that.”

But the survivors heard only the alarm, and the long, slow scream of the Dawn Meter as it ticked up and up, more and more of them going critical.

Sophie watched the crowd, already calculating which faces would still be alive at the end.

She did not flinch. Not even when the first fistfight broke out, or when the lights flickered and the Dawn Meter started to pulse, not just blue, but now orange and red. It was not beautiful. But it was inevitable.

And in the darkness, Sophie allowed herself a thin, private smile.

Because the race was on again.
