Dawn Experiment

#Day 30 — 16:20

The Mother Mercy smelled worse than Kim remembered.

The salt-brine of preserved fish had soaked into every plank, every rope, every scrap of fabric aboard. Drying racks lined the deck, heavy with split ike, their silver skin glistening in the afternoon sun. The crew had been busy—too busy to clean, too busy to care. Kim breathed through her mouth and tightened the last bolt on the outboard mount.

Chidi knelt beside her, his dark hands steady on the wrench. He had learned fast in the past two days—not an engineer, never would be, but he could follow instructions. He could tighten a bolt without stripping the threads. On a boat full of fishermen and farmers, that was enough.

”Almost there,” Kim said. ”One more.”

Chidi nodded, his jaw tight, his eyes on the work. He had not spoken much since she came aboard. None of them had. They were grateful, yes, but there was something else—a wariness, a fear that Kim had seen before. They had been hunted. They expected to be hunted again.

Emeka stood at the bow, directing the last of the solar panel installations. His voice carried across the deck, calm and steady, the voice of a man who had learned to give orders in the middle of storms. His crew moved around him, hauling cables, securing mounts, their movements slow but sure.

Kim checked her watch. Two hours past schedule. The installation had taken longer than she had hoped—not because the work was hard, but because she had to explain every step, check every connection, redo half of what they had done themselves. They were good men. They were not engineers.

She reached for the last cable, plugged it into the motor, and wiped her hands on her coveralls. ”All right. Fire it up.”

One of Emeka’s men threw the switch.

The motor hummed—smooth, steady, exactly as Kim had expected. She let out a breath, allowed herself a moment of satisfaction. Then the hum stuttered, crackled, and died. Lights flickered across the deck and went dark. The solar panels went silent. The entire boat went black.

Kim swore in Korean—a long, fluent stream that made Chidi’s eyebrows rise.

”What happened?” he asked.

”I don’t know yet.” She was already moving, pulling open the panel at the stern, revealing the mesh of wires and cables she had spent two days installing. ”Check the battery. Tell me you wired it the way I showed you.”

Chidi nodded. ”I did.”

”Check it anyway.”

He disappeared below deck. Kim stared at the burned wires in her hands, the blackened insulation, the copper exposed and fused. A short. Somewhere. She did not have time to trace it.

Her comms crackled.

”Kim.” Vivienne’s voice was sharp, urgent. ”Take evasive action. Four armed speedboats, heading for your coordinates. ETA ten minutes. Get off that boat now.”

Kim’s blood went cold. She straightened, looked toward the horizon. Nothing yet. But Vivienne’s drones saw what she could not.

”Emeka!” she shouted. ”Pirates. Four boats. Coming fast.”

The deck erupted. Emeka’s voice boomed across the boat, ordering the lifeboat lowered, the crew to their stations. Men scrambled for weapons—knives, crowbars, a single rusted rifle that someone had been saving for years. Kim watched them arm themselves, watched their hands shake, and felt a cold knot form in her stomach.

They were not soldiers. They were fishermen. They would die.

Her comms crackled again. ”Kim, I said evacuate. Now.”

Kim looked at Emeka. His face was calm, but his eyes—his eyes were afraid. He was calculating, she realized. Calculating how many of his people would survive, how many would not, whether any of them would see the sunset.

She looked at Chidi, who had emerged from below deck, his face pale, his hands empty. He had not found the problem. He did not know how.

She weighed the options. Leave now, on the lifeboat, let the Blue Oasis pick her up. Safe. Easy. The smart choice.

She looked at their faces again.

”I can’t,” she said into the comms. ”The boat’s dead. No power. If I leave now, they’re sitting ducks.”

”Kim—”

”If I fix this, they can run. The motors work. The batteries are charged. I just need to find the short.” She was already moving, pulling open panels, tracing wires. ”Buy me time.”

A pause. Then Vivienne’s voice, quieter. ”How long?”

”I don’t know. Ten minutes. Maybe less.”

”Kim—”

”Please.”

Another pause. Then: ”You have ten minutes. The Blue Oasis is moving to intercept.”

Kim did not answer. She was already working.

#Day 30 — 16:28

The first bullets struck the hull as Kim was stripping wires.

She heard them before she felt them—a sharp crack, then another, then the sound of splintering wood and screaming. She dropped low, pressed herself against the deck, kept her hands steady. The wires in her fingers were exposed, twisted, ready to be reconnected.

”Chidi!” she shouted. ”Reset the wiring at the motor! Now!”

He was already moving, crawling across the deck, keeping his head down. Bullets punched through the railing above him, through the cabin windows, through the drying racks of fish. The smell of salt and blood mixed in the air.

Someone was hit. Kim heard the scream, heard Emeka shouting orders, heard the scramble of feet across the deck. She did not look up. She could not look up. Her hands were shaking, but she forced them still, forced herself to focus on the wires, on the connections, on the work that would save them all.

One of the speedboats was close now. She could hear the engine, the shouts of men in a language she did not recognize, the slap of water against the hull. They were preparing to board.

Kim reached for the last connection.

Then the driver’s torso exploded.

The shot came from nowhere—a single crack, impossibly loud, and the man at the helm of the lead speedboat was gone, replaced by a spray of blood and bone. The boat slewed sideways, its engine screaming, and before the crew could react, another shot hit the fuel line. Fire bloomed across the deck. Men screamed, jumped into the water, burned.

Kim knew that shot. She had seen Victoria Elise practice on the Blue Oasis, her stance perfect, her breathing controlled, her eye never leaving the scope until the target shattered into pieces hundreds of yards away.

She allowed herself a moment of relief. The Blue Oasis was here.

The drones came next—two of them, buzzing low over the water, their cameras tracking the remaining speedboats, their presence a warning. Kim heard more shots, more screams, the sound of engines sputtering and dying.

She finished the last connection, twisted the wires together, and shouted to Chidi. ”Try it now!”

He threw the switch. The motor hummed—steady, smooth, alive. Lights flickered across the deck. The solar panels glowed.

Kim felt the vibration beneath her feet, felt the boat begin to move, and allowed herself another moment of relief.

Then the bullet hit her thigh.

It was a ricochet—she knew that later, when she had time to think about it—a stray round that had bounced off the railing and found her leg. But in the moment, there was only the shock, the heat, the sudden realization that she could not stand.

She fell. Her head hit the deck, and the world went white.

When her vision cleared, Chidi was beside her, his hands pressing cloth against her leg, his face pale. The cloth was already red.

”Can you walk?” he asked.

She tried. Pain exploded up her thigh, and she bit down on her lip to keep from screaming. ”Help me to the engine room.”

He pulled her up, half-carried her across the deck, through the hatch, down the ladder. The engine room was dark, lit only by the glow of the new control panel. Kim crawled to the switch, stretched out her arm, and flicked it on.

The motor hummed. The boat surged forward.

”Go,” she whispered into her comms. ”Go now.”

Emeka’s voice came back, rough with emotion. ”We’re moving. Thank you. Thank you.”

Kim let herself fall against the bulkhead. Her leg was on fire. The cloth around her thigh was soaked through. She could feel herself slipping, the edges of her vision going dark.

Another explosion—close, too close. The hull shuddered, and Kim heard the rush of water, felt it cold against her feet. Shrapnel had pierced the hull. They were taking on water.

Chidi shouted something, and men rushed past her, their feet splashing in the rising water, their voices urgent. They were trying to seal the breach. Kim tried to help, tried to push herself up, but her leg would not hold her.

The boat banked hard to the right. Kim’s head struck the engine support pylon, and the world went black.

#Day 30 — 17：13

She woke to the smell of blood and salt and burning fuel.

Her head throbbed. Her leg was a knot of pain. She was being carried—up, across the deck, toward the railing. Someone was shouting her name.

She opened her eyes. The sky was blue, the water gray, the Mother Mercy still moving. Behind her, the speedboats were burning, their crews scattered across the waves. The Blue Oasis was circling, its guns trained on the horizon.

Chidi’s face appeared above her. He was crying.

”You’re alive,” he said. ”You’re alive.”

Kim tried to speak, but her throat was dry, her voice gone. She managed a nod.

They laid her on the deck, and someone pressed a blanket against her leg. The pain was distant now, muffled, like something happening to someone else. She watched the clouds drift overhead and listened to the shouts of the crew, the hum of the motor, the distant sound of Vivienne’s voice over the comms.

She thought of Note. She thought of Zhao. She thought of the family she was not quite part of, and the people she had just saved.

Then she closed her eyes, and let the darkness take her.

#Day 30 — 17:30

The aft deck of the Blue Oasis was crowded when the first boat returned. Zhao stood at the railing, watching the horizon, his hands cold despite the warmth of the evening. Vivienne was beside him, her captain’s mask in place, her eyes fixed on the water. Iqbal stood behind them, a medical kit in her hands, her face unreadable.

The crew of the Blue Oasis moved around them, hauling bodies onto the deck. Dead pirates—what was left of them—were laid in a row on the wet steel, their clothes burned, their faces unrecognizable. Someone had thrown a tarp over the worst of them, but the smell of charred flesh and salt water was thick in the air.

Zhao watched the crew work, and something cold settled in his stomach.

Then he saw Chen.

She was standing at the edge of the deck, her blind eyes turned toward the bodies, her face calm. She was not looking at them—she could not look at anything—but she was present, listening, waiting. Zhao had not seen her leave the treatment suite in days. He had not seen her stand in the open like this, exposed, vulnerable.

He crossed to Vivienne. ”Why are they collecting the bodies?”

Vivienne did not look at him. Her eyes were on the row of dead men, on the crew hosing blood from the deck, on the tarp that covered the worst of the carnage.

”Chen’s orders,” she said. ”She wants them preserved. In the freezer.”

A chill went through Zhao’s spine. He thought of Blanc—the monster that had risen from the freezer, the thing that had torn through the ship, the bodies that had been stored and forgotten and then remembered too late. He thought of the fight, the deaths, the horror of watching a dead man turn into something else.

”We’ve seen this before,” he said. ”The Blanc incident. Bodies in the freezer mutate. They become—”

”I know.” Vivienne’s voice was tight. ”I told her. About the risk. About what happened before.”

”Then why?”

Vivienne was quiet for a long moment. The crew dragged another body onto the deck, and she watched them lay it beside the others, watched someone cross the dead man’s hands over his chest.

”She said it was important,” Vivienne said. ”She didn’t explain. She never explains. But she said—” She stopped, shook her head. ”She said we would need them.”

Zhao stared at her. ”Need them for what?”

Vivienne turned to face him. Her mask was still in place, but her eyes—her eyes were afraid.

”I don’t know,” she said. ”That’s what scares me.”

She looked back at the bodies. The crew was covering them now, wrapping them in canvas, preparing them for transport to the freezer. Chen stood apart, still watching, still waiting.

”We’ll install cameras,” Vivienne said. ”Twenty-four hours a day. Monitors in the command room, in the medical bay, in the workshop. Someone will always be watching.”

Zhao nodded. It was not enough. They both knew it was not enough.

”But you’re afraid,” he said. ”Not of the bodies.”

Vivienne shook her head. ”I’m afraid of what she’ll use them for.”

They stood together in the silence, watching the crew work. The sun was setting, the sky turning gold and orange, the water darkening. Somewhere out there, Kim was being carried onto the Mother Mercy’s life boat, her leg bleeding, her head throbbing, her body broken.

Zhao thought of the freezer. He thought of the bodies stacked inside, waiting. He thought of Chen, blind and dying, building something none of them could see.

He thought of Vivienne’s words: I’m afraid of what she’ll use them for.

He did not have an answer. He was not sure he wanted one.

The sun sank lower, and the crew finished their work, and the bodies were carried below deck. Zhao watched them go, and he held Vivienne’s hand, and he waited.
