Dawn Experiment

#Day 27 — 23:40

The spa was silent when Alexis returned.

The candles on the water had burned out hours ago, their wax hardened into pale flowers on the dark surface. The floating trays drifted against the edges, forgotten. Only the large pillar candle on the table still flickered, its light catching the curve of the bath, the shine of the stone, the silhouette of the woman waiting for her.

Sabine sat on the edge of the table, naked, her legs crossed at the ankle, her hands braced on either side. She smiled when Alexis walked in.

Alexis was naked too. Her jacket was gone, lost somewhere in the observation deck, in the hours of bodies and mouths and hands. She did not remember taking it off. She did not remember much of anything after Vivienne left, after Zhao carried her out, after she had stood alone in the candlelight and then walked into the crowd.

She remembered bodies. She remembered giving and taking, the rhythm of it, the blankness. She remembered looking for something and not finding it.

Now she sat beside Sabine, close enough to feel her warmth, close enough to smell her—soap and skin and something underneath, something that was not the engineered perfume she had worn to hide herself. This was Sabine. Just Sabine.

”You’re waiting for me to make an offer,” Alexis said. Her voice was flat. She was tired of games.

Sabine’s smile widened. ”The ship.”

Alexis raised an eyebrow.

”The ship is my offer. Specifically, sharing it. You and me. We make the rules. No more loneliness.” She leaned closer, her voice dropping. ”We survive.”

Alexis laughed, a short, hollow sound. ”We’re surviving now.”

Sabine shook her head slowly. Her hand found Alexis’s thigh, rested there, warm and still. ”The Commission is coming for this ship. They won’t stop until they get what they want.”

”What do they want?”

”Zhao. And the blind girl.” Sabine’s fingers traced a line up Alexis’s thigh, light, teasing. ”They don’t care about the rest of us. As long as someone delivers the vector and the weapon, they’ll promise protection. Rewards. A place in whatever comes next.”

Alexis stared at her. The fingers on her thigh were moving higher, slower, but she barely felt them. Her mind was on the words. ”You want to hand them over.”

”I want us to be on the winning side.” Sabine’s hand stopped, her palm flat against Alexis’s hip. ”The council thinks they’re strong. They’re not. Their security team is stretched thin. B-Deck is chaos. The captain runs around unprotected, and the rest of them? They hide in their suite and pretend they’re building a better world.”

She moved closer, her breath warm against Alexis’s neck. ”All we need is opposition. Riots. Enough chaos that the council collapses. And you—” her lips brushed Alexis’s ear, ”—you can give us that.”

Alexis’s body was responding. She could feel herself hardening, feel the heat spreading from Sabine’s hand, from her mouth, from the words she was speaking. She let it happen. She was tired of fighting what she was.

”What do you want me to do?”

Sabine’s mouth found her neck, kissed it, bit it gently. ”Be yourself. Break their rules. More women, more often. Keep them here, keep them wanting, keep them coming back. When there are enough of us, when the council has no one left to enforce their orders—” She pulled back, met Alexis’s eyes. ”They’ll fall.”

Alexis looked at her. She saw the hunger there, the calculation, the same hunger she had seen in a hundred faces, a thousand rooms. But underneath it, something else. Something that looked almost like loneliness.

”You said we’d rule together.”

”We will.” Sabine’s hand moved between her legs, found her, stroked her. ”You’ll be the new vector. Better than Zhao. Stronger. They’ll follow you because they can’t help it.”

Alexis shook her head. ”I’m not a vector. I’ll never be a vector.”

Sabine’s fingers tightened, her rhythm quickening. ”Then be something else. Be yourself. Just—” She kissed her, soft at first, then deeper. ”—be with me.”

The words hit something in Alexis’s chest. She let herself be kissed, let herself be touched, let herself want. Sabine straddled her, guided her inside, and for a moment there was nothing but the heat of her, the rhythm of her, the way she moved like she had been waiting for this.

They moved together. Sabine talked between kisses, between breaths, between the waves that built and broke and built again. She told stories—a childhood in Lyon, a mother who drank, a father who left, a Commission agent who found her when she was seventeen and promised her a place on a ship where no one would ever hurt her again. Her voice cracked on the words. Her eyes were wet.

Alexis held her, moved with her, let the words wash over her. She did not know if the stories were true. She did not care. They were beautiful, and they were for her, and for a moment she let herself believe that someone wanted her for something other than her body.

After the third climax, Sabine lay across her, her breath ragged, her skin slick. Her mouth was at Alexis’s ear, her voice soft, almost a whisper.

”The council doesn’t care about you. They want to lock you up, control you, use you when it’s convenient. Zhao and his family? They have each other. They don’t need you. They never will.”

Alexis stared at the ceiling. The candle was still burning, the flame small now, the wax nearly gone.

”But I need you,” Sabine said. ”We could have something, Alexis. Something real.”

Alexis was quiet for a long time. The candle flickered. The water in the baths was dark and still.

”What do you want me to do?”

Sabine kissed her throat. ”Break their rules. Bring more women into the spa. Keep them here longer. Make them want to stay. When they start fighting the council, when there are enough of us, we’ll be ready.”

Alexis nodded slowly. She felt Sabine’s smile against her skin, felt her begin to move again, felt herself rising to meet her.

They did not stop until the candle burned out.

#Day 28 — 06:17

Zhao woke to an empty bed.

He lay still for a moment, listening. The sheets beside him were cold. Vivienne’s side. Aida’s. Mei-Lin’s. He could hear voices from the kitchenette, low and urgent, and he pushed himself up, his body aching from the night before.

They were arguing.

He crossed to the kitchenette, and the sight stopped him. Vivienne was standing at the counter, her hand pressed flat against the surface, her shoulders tense. Aida was beside her, her voice low, her hand on Vivienne’s arm. Mei-Lin stood across from them, her arms crossed, her face set.

”You need to rest,” Aida was saying. ”You can barely stand.”

”I can stand.” Vivienne’s voice was raw, but steady. ”The ship needs a captain.”

”The ship needs you alive,” Mei-Lin said. ”If you go to the bridge like this—” She gestured at Vivienne’s face, at the tremor in her hands, at the way she was holding herself too straight, too still. ”The crew will see. They’ll know something is wrong.”

”Then I’ll tell them I’m sick. I’ll tell them I need to rest. But I can’t just—” Vivienne’s voice cracked. She pressed her hand to her face, and Zhao saw her shoulders shake.

He moved to her, his hand finding her arm, turning her toward him. Her face was pale, her eyes still glazed, her skin hot to the touch. She was sweating, trembling, fighting for control she did not have.

”Zhao.” Her voice was small. ”Tell them I have to go.”

He looked at her. Really looked. The glaze in her eyes was thinner than last night, but it was still there. Her pupils were dilated, her lips parted, her breath coming in short, sharp gasps. And there was a smell coming from her—something thick and sweet, something that made his body respond before his mind caught up. The realization struck him with bitter humor—his body had remained unmoved by Alexis’s potent pheromones, yet here he was, responding instantly to Vivienne’s fevered scent.

He knew that smell. He had smelled it on B-Deck, in the crowds outside the spa, in the women who had lost themselves to Alexis. But this was stronger, sharper, more focused. He recognized the scent—a more potent version of Vivienne’s natural musk that he’d come to know during their nights together. Whatever was in that aphrodisiac hadn’t created something new; it had amplified what was already there, turning a whisper into a shout.

It’s reacting to her differently, he thought. Her body. The genes Chen talked about.

He pushed the thought aside. He was not a scientist. He was not Chen. But he knew, looking at her, that she was not ready for the bridge.

He took her hand. ”The ship can run without you for a day. Sophie offered to take your shift.”

Vivienne’s eyes flashed. ”Sophie—”

”I know you hate her,” he said. ”I know you don’t agree with her. But she’s right about this.” He squeezed her hand. ”You’re not ready. And the crew needs you to be ready when you stand in front of them.”

She stared at him. He saw the fight in her eyes, the same fight he had seen in the submarine, on the deck when she declared herself a Zhao, in the council room when she became captain. He saw her want to push through, to prove she was strong enough.

And then he saw her let it go.

Her shoulders dropped. Her hand tightened on his. She did not speak, but she nodded, and he pulled her toward the lounge, toward the cushions where she could sit, where she could rest.

Aida let out a breath. Mei-Lin moved to the kitchenette, her hands already reaching for the kettle.

The doorbell rang.

They all froze. Zhao looked at Aida, at Mei-Lin, at Vivienne. No one was expecting anyone this early.

He crossed to the door, pulled it open, and found Sophie Laurent standing in the corridor.

She was dressed in her usual white, her hair pinned, her face composed. But her eyes—her eyes were on Vivienne, and Zhao saw something there he had not expected. Fear.

”Mother.” Vivienne’s voice was sharp, the glaze in her eyes momentarily forgotten. ”What are you doing here?”

Sophie stepped inside without waiting for an invitation. Her eyes moved around the room—the tangled bed, the empty cups, the marks on Aida’s thighs, on Mei-Lin’s back, on Vivienne’s collarbone. She took it all in, and her face did not change.

But her hands, clasped behind her back, were white-knuckled.

She sat on the edge of the lounge, across from Vivienne, and did not ask how she was. She did not need to.

Sophie’s gaze flicked over Vivienne’s disheveled appearance, lingering on the marks visible above her collar. ”Word travels quickly on a ship this size. The night crew saw you stumbling from the spa. They saw who had to carry you home.” She leaned forward slightly. ”I warned you,” she said, her voice barely audible yet unyielding as a blade. ”I told you exactly what she was capable of.”

Vivienne’s jaw tightened. ”You warned me to lock her up. You warned me to treat her like an animal.”

”And I was right.” Sophie leaned forward. ”She is an animal, Vivienne. She was made to be one. And now—” She gestured at Vivienne, at the marks on her body, at the tremor in her hands. ”Now you know what happens when you get too close.”

Zhao moved to Vivienne’s side, sat beside her, took her hand. He could feel her trembling, feel her fighting for control. The smell was stronger now, thick in the air between them, and he felt his body respond again, felt the pull of it, the hunger.

He forced himself to breathe. Forced himself to focus.

Sophie’s eyes were on him. She saw his hand in Vivienne’s, saw the way he held himself, and something in her face softened.

”You were vulnerable too,” Zhao said. ”To her.”

Sophie’s smile was thin. ”I lost myself at a party, years ago. Before the pandemic. Before I knew what she was. Men and women—” She stopped. Her hands tightened on her knees. ”I was awake the whole time. I could see myself, could hear myself, but I couldn’t stop. It was like watching a horror movie I couldn’t turn off.”

She looked at Vivienne, and for a moment, her mask slipped. ”It took me days to recover. I swore I would never let her near me again. I swore I would protect my family from her.” Her voice cracked. ”And now she has you.”

The silence stretched. Aida poured tea, her hands steady, her face calm. Mei-Lin set out cups, her movements soft, her presence quiet. Chen slipped through the new door, her blind eyes finding the shape of the room, the stranger in their midst.

Zhao guided her to the lounge, told her Sophie was visiting. Chen nodded, settled beside Aida, and listened.

Sophie watched her. ”She is family now?”

Everyone nodded. Sophie laughed, a soft, surprised sound. ”One son-in-law and three daughters-in-law. What a world we live in.”

But her eyes lingered on Zhao, and her voice was softer when she spoke to him. He did not know why. He did not ask.

Sophie set her cup down without drinking. She looked at Vivienne, and her face hardened. ”I will take the bridge today. You will rest.”

Vivienne opened her mouth to argue, but Zhao squeezed her hand, and she stopped.

”The crew needs to see someone standing there,” Sophie said. ”It doesn’t have to be you.”

Vivienne’s eyes were wet. She did not speak.

Sophie stood. She walked toward the door, her steps measured, her back straight. At the threshold, she stopped. She turned, and her eyes moved around the room—the tangled bed, the empty cups, the family gathered on the lounge. They stopped on the tea tree in the corner, its leaves dark and glossy, its roots deep in the pot Mei-Lin had found for it.

She stared at it for a long moment. Zhao saw something flicker in her face—recognition, maybe, or memory.

Then her eyes found his.

”Take care of her,” she said. ”I trust you to do the right thing.”

She was gone before he could answer.

Zhao knelt beside Vivienne. Her eyes were still glazed, her body still trembling, but she was calmer now. She leaned into him, her head on his shoulder, her breath slowing.

He stroked her hair, felt the silk of it, the warmth of her skin. The smell was still there, thick and sweet, and he felt himself lean closer, felt his hand drift to her thigh—

He stopped. He forced himself to breathe. His body wanted her. His mind knew she was not herself.

He pulled back, just enough, and held her.

Aida’s voice broke the silence. ”Chen. What do we do about Alexis?”

Chen was still for a long moment. Her blind eyes were fixed on something none of them could see.

Then she smiled.

”Nothing.”

Zhao stared at her. ”Nothing?”

”We do nothing.” She turned her face toward the window, toward the rising sun. ”And we win.”

No one spoke. Vivienne’s hand tightened on Zhao’s. Aida’s breath caught. Mei-Lin set down the teapot, her face soft with wonder.

Chen did not explain. She did not need to. Her blind eyes saw what they could not.

Zhao looked at his family—Vivienne, still trembling, still fighting; Aida, steady as stone; Mei-Lin, warm and waiting; Chen, already seeing the end they could not imagine. He looked at the tea tree in the corner, at the sunlight catching its leaves, and he let himself believe.

Tomorrow, they would fight. But today, they would wait.

He pulled Vivienne closer, breathed her in, and let the morning come.
