Dawn Experiment

# Day 7 - 22:16

Zhao Xun always thought he’d die on a mountainside, or in some anonymous hospital, not on the deck of a billionaire’s yacht during a viral apocalypse.

He was last in line for the rescue craft, standing at the bow as the others scrambled to secure the lines and settle in. The wind stung his face, and each breath brought the salt and chemical smoke of a world burning behind him. The waves rocked the hull, but the ship felt oddly still—like the calm just before a nosedive off a cliff.

Below, on the main deck, everything moved at hyper-speed. Crew and survivors poured up the stairwells, some limping, some bleeding, all clutching bags or each other. Above them, flashes from the lower decks—muzzle flares and the strobe of emergency lighting—made the yacht look like a ghost ship caught between two disasters. He could still see the bridge, where Captain Verne worked the controls, her silhouette unmoving even as alarms pulsed and glass shattered somewhere to port.

Zhao gripped the icy steel rail until his knuckles went white. He told himself he was only watching to make sure the lifeboat launched safely, but it was a lie. He didn’t want to leave. He wanted to be in the thick of it, to help, to matter. Instead, he was here—cargo to be preserved, a “vector” for the others, the irreplaceable sperm-donor with a side gig as a morale mascot.

The last time he saw Maggie was less than three hours ago. She’d called him “kid,” then let him inside a part of her he didn’t know she had. Now she was down there, bleeding in the dark, buying time with her body and whatever firepower she could scrounge. He wondered if she hated him for leaving, if she’d even think about him at all as she reloaded and aimed for the next impossible shot.

He felt the old panic rise—heart drumming in his ears, every muscle screaming to do something, anything—but he stayed put. He watched as the last raft filled. Women sobbed or held each other in silence. Children, he noticed for the first time, were nowhere. It was just adults now, survivors of the cull. He tried to spot Mei-Lin, or Elena, or Vivienne, but in the chaos, faces blurred.

The wind shifted, and from somewhere behind him came the faint, ragged chorus of gunfire, then the unmistakable shriek of steel against steel. He saw, through the aft glass, the monster on the move again: a stuttering, multi-limbed silhouette pulling itself along the exterior, every head now trailing a plume of viral mist. It looked bigger than before, or maybe just closer.

A voice broke through the din, sharp and clear: “Zhao!”

He turned, and saw Aida standing in the lifeboat, arms raised, motioning him to get the hell down there. Her face was unreadable—eyes wide, mouth tight, the kind of look people get when they know they’re about to be orphaned.

He looked back at the bridge, at the machine-gun flicker in the windows, and thought: Maybe they’ll make it. Maybe I will, too. Maybe it’s okay to want that.

He closed his eyes. When he opened them, he tried to run, but the deck bucked sideways as a concussive boom rocked the yacht from below. The railing tore from his hands and for a second he was airborne, then horizontal, then tumbling.

He hit the water like a stone, the shock knocking all thought from his head. The cold bit into his lungs and made his limbs heavy, but he kicked anyway, up, then toward the light. The yacht loomed over him, a burning skyscraper in the middle of black infinity, and he swam for it, knowing there was no chance in hell of making it.

He felt hands seize his collar—then arms, many arms, yanking him into the boat. He flailed, gasped, and coughed seawater into Nadia’s face.

“Fuck,” she spat, dragging him to the floor. “You okay?”

He nodded, even though he couldn’t see her through the water in his eyes.

Aida knelt beside him. She wrapped both arms around his head and pressed his face to her chest. “You’re alive,” she said, over and over. He didn’t answer. He couldn’t. He just let her hold him while the raft motor thumped into motion.

He craned his neck and looked back at the yacht. Smoke and flame poured from the stern, but the bridge windows still glowed with red light. A figure moved inside—maybe Verne, maybe someone else. On the lower deck, the monster had vanished, but the metal was scorched and pitted where it had been.

They were a hundred meters out before he realized he was crying. Not the loud, dramatic kind—just silent, shuddering, wet. The world shrank to the circle of Aida’s arms and the numbing cold of his skin.

He turned his face up to hers. She brushed the hair from his eyes and kissed his forehead. “We’ll make it,” she said.

He wanted to believe her, but all he could see was the empty, burning ship, and the line of faces he might never see again.

# Day 8 - 1:51

The rescue raft was not designed for comfort. Eighteen people squeezed shoulder-to-shoulder on benches slick with rain and seawater, plastic tarps lashed over their heads to keep the worst of the spray out. Every wave slapped the hull with a noise that vibrated straight through the spine.

They drifted for hours. The other three rafts had managed to tether up, forming a ragged rectangle. Sometimes the boats drew close enough for shouted conversation; other times, the wind and chop drove them apart. The survivors huddled under the tarps, some holding hands, others staring glassy-eyed at the horizon or down at their own shoes.

It rained off and on, enough to soak everyone through, to raise welts on the skin from the salt. Zhao and Aida sat at the stern, their knees pressed together. She kept her arm tight around his shoulder, fingers kneading the base of his neck as if trying to massage the guilt out.

Every so often, a survivor would break down. The air would fill with ragged, animal sobs, and then everyone would get quiet until it passed. At one point, Mei-Lin sang softly to herself in Mandarin, a lullaby Zhao barely remembered from childhood. He listened to her voice and thought of his own mother, who by now had probably succumbed to the same virus or worse.

He and Aida talked as they drifted. At first, it was logistical—what to do if the yacht never returned, who had the emergency locator, how much water was left. But then the talk veered, as it always did, into darker places: If they were the last people left, was there a point in trying to save anyone? Would any of them ever see home again? Was it better to go down fighting, or just give up?

Aida’s hand never left his shoulder. “I think we already know the answer,” she whispered. “We keep each other alive. Until we can’t.”

The comms unit crackled every twenty minutes. Most times it was just static, or a brief weather update. Sometimes it was nothing at all.

On the fourth hour, a sudden burst of digital noise cut through. Then a voice, ragged and almost unrecognizable: “Lifeboats, this is Captain Verne. Repeat, this is Captain Verne. Stand by for pickup. I say again, stand by for pickup.”

The silence that followed was electric. For a moment, no one spoke.

Then the entire raft exploded with noise. Cheers, shrieks, wild laughter. People hugged each other, kissed, sobbed openly with relief.

Aida pulled Zhao in and pressed her lips to his ear. “Told you,” she said. He closed his eyes, letting the warmth of her body shield him from the shivering.

He didn’t say what he was thinking: that the Captain’s voice sounded thin, weak. That the yacht might already be more tomb than rescue.

Instead, he said, “We’re going home,” and let himself believe it, even for just a minute.
