COVELENT: XenoTrait

The crystal did not look like something that belonged in the world.

Markus stood before it, unable to take his eyes away from the enormous structure rising from the centre of the chamber.

Its deep-blue surface caught the light from the ceiling and returned it in brilliant reflections, making the walls around it appear almost insignificant. The crystal extended far above him, disappearing into the darkness beyond the reach of the chamber’s lights.

Thick formations branched from its central mass, some smooth and polished, others jagged enough to resemble the teeth of an enormous creature buried beneath the Cain Foundation.

He had seen the records, he had read about the classifications, the experiments, the deaths and the survivors.

He had even watched a man move things with his mind and he had witnessed the consequences of a single diamond striking another human being. Yet none of those things had prepared him for standing in front of the source of it all.

His crystalline hand had begun to change without his permission. Fine blue lines crawled between his fingers, catching the light as he slowly flexed them.

He tried to close his fist, but his attention kept returning to the enormous crystal. It was difficult to accept that something so beautiful could be connected to so much suffering.

”How long has it been here?” Markus asked.

Victor stood several paces behind him, his hands clasped loosely behind his back. His expression had not changed since he had opened the chamber, and the blue light sliding across his face seemed to make him look even colder than usual.

”Longer than you have been alive.”

”That doesn’t answer my question.” Markus added.

”It answers the part of it that matters.” Victor said.

Markus turned towards him. ”You brought me down here, showed me the entire thing, and expect me to accept an answer like that?”

”I expect you to understand that not every question deserves an immediate answer.”

”Convenient.” Markus continued.

Victor studied him for a moment, apparently deciding whether the remark deserved a response.

He eventually turned towards the crystal again, his attention settling on a narrow formation that projected from its lower section.

”You have spent your life hearing about Mark 8 as though it were a problem to be solved. You have seen the results of its influence, but you have never understood its scale. This is why I brought you here.”

”To make me understand that it’s powerful?” Markus scoffed.

”To make you understand that power is not always visible in the form you expect.”

Markus glanced at his crystalline hand. ”And what am I supposed to understand about myself?”

”That is something you will have to discover.”

The answer irritated him more than a direct refusal would have.

Markus looked back at the crystal. ”How many people have died because of this?”

”Many.”

”How many?” Markus questioned.

”I do not have a number I can give you with complete confidence.”

”You built a Foundation around it, conducted experiments on people, and classified everyone who came into contact with it. You’re telling me you don’t know how many died?”

”I’m telling you that the records are incomplete.

Some subjects died before they could be properly documented. Others were lost during experiments, and certain incidents were never entered into the official database.” Victor paused. ”The Foundation has never been as orderly as you imagine.”

For a moment, Markus forgot about the crystal. He looked at his father with renewed suspicion, thinking of the restricted files and the dead researcher whose photograph he had reopened before leaving the records room.

The man had become another name in a system that reduced human lives to classifications and results.

”Then what else have you left out?”

Victor’s gaze returned to him. ”More than you know.”

It was the closest thing to an admission Markus had ever received from him, and it left him with more questions than answers. He wanted to demand an explanation, to force Victor to reveal everything he had hidden, but the enormous crystal stood between them like a reminder that the truth was larger than either of them.

”Why show me this now?” Markus asked. ”You said I wasn’t ready...What changed?”

”Nothing has changed.”

”Then why bring me here?” Markus continued.

”Because you went looking for answers, and you were going to continue whether I approved or not.

I would rather you understand the scale of what you are dealing with than wander through restricted laboratories believing a handful of recovered files tells you everything.”

Markus looked away as he disliked how reasonable the explanation sounded, ”Does Ash know about this?”

”No.” Victor answered.

”Reina?”

”No.”Victor continued.

”Darius?”

Victor’s expression tightened almost imperceptibly at the name. ”Darius knows enough to understand that his survival does not make him the authority on Mark 8.”

”He’s survived something the Foundation couldn’t explain. That seems worth listening to.” Markus added.

”Listening is not the same as believing.” Victor said.

”Neither is hiding information.” Markus added.

For the first time, Victor’s silence lasted long enough for Markus to notice.

His father looked at him, and something faint shifted behind his eyes. It was gone almost immediately, replaced by the familiar composure Markus had spent his entire life trying to understand.

”You have learned to challenge my answers,” Victor said. ”That does not mean you have learned to recognise a dangerous question.”

”Maybe you should stop treating every question like a threat.” Markus answered.

”Perhaps you should stop assuming every answer would improve your understanding.” Victor insisted.

Markus opened his mouth, but no response came.

The words annoyed him because they sounded like the kind of thing he would have said himself only a few days earlier. He had always believed that knowledge belonged to those willing to pursue it, and that hesitation was a weakness people disguised as caution.

Now he was beginning to see how easily the pursuit of knowledge could become an excuse for ignoring everything left behind along the way.

The trapped researcher returned to his thoughts. He remembered the man’s voice beneath the collapsing passage, the urgency in his expression, and the decision Markus had made when he chose to pursue Subject 014 instead of turning back.

He had told himself that the information he might gain was worth the risk. He had repeated the reasoning afterward, even when he stood alone in the records room, staring at the photograph of someone who would never return.

He still believed the decision had made sense. What troubled him was that the explanation no longer seemed sufficient.

”Father,” he said, ”if Mark 8 is so important, why do you treat the people affected by it as disposable?”

Victor did not answer immediately, ”Because importance and value are not interchangeable,” he said at last. ”A person may be important to an experiment without being valuable to the result.”

Markus stared at him. ”You actually believe that.”

”I believe the world does not owe anyone survival.”

The answer settled between them with the weight of something familiar. Markus had heard versions of that philosophy all his life. It had once sounded like a simple truth, a rule that separated people who could survive from those who could not.

Now, after seeing the records and watching a man die beneath a collapsed passage, he found himself wondering whether the rule explained the world or merely gave people permission to stop questioning it.

He looked down at his hand again. The blue lines had receded, leaving the crystalline surface almost indistinguishable from ordinary skin.

”Let’s go,” he said.

Victor gave a small nod. ”There is nothing else you need to see tonight.”

Markus almost laughed at the certainty in his father’s voice. He had just discovered that the Foundation had concealed entire sections of its history, and Victor was still deciding what he needed to see. Nevertheless, Markus followed him towards the chamber doors. He was not ready to continue the argument, and he could not ignore the exhaustion gathering behind his eyes.

As Victor entered the access code, Markus glanced back one final time.

The crystal remained motionless beneath the lights, its deep-blue formations reflecting the chamber in distorted fragments. For a moment, he thought he saw a faint movement deep within its surface, but when he looked again, there was nothing except the shifting reflections.

The doors opened, and he followed his father outside.

Neither of them noticed the tiny blue fragment caught against the inner edge of Victor’s sleeve.

The private elevator carried them back towards the upper levels in silence.

Markus stood with his arms folded, watching the numbers change above the doors.

He could feel Victor’s presence beside him without looking, as though even the confined space had been arranged to remind him that his father was still in control... There were questions he wanted to ask, but he suspected that the answers would only lead to more questions, and he was tired of spending every conversation chasing something Victor refused to name.

When the elevator stopped, Victor stepped out first.

”Get some rest,” he said. ”You have allowed the events of the last few days to interfere with your judgement.”

Markus followed him into the corridor. ”You make it sound like I chose to have half the Foundation’s secrets thrown at me.”

”You chose to enter a restricted level.”

”Because your people locked away the truth.”Markus snapped back.

”Because some truths become dangerous when they are discovered without context.”

Markus stopped walking. ”And who decides when someone has enough context? You?”

Victor turned towards him. ”Someone has to make that decision.”

”That doesn’t mean it should always be you.”

”No,” Victor replied. ”It means that someone must accept the consequences when the decision is wrong.”

For a brief moment, Markus had nothing to say. Victor continued down the corridor, leaving him standing beneath the white lights.

There was no satisfaction in winning the argument, because neither of them had really won anything.

Markus had gained access to the truth, but he was beginning to understand that knowledge did not automatically make a person wiser. Sometimes it simply gave them more ways to justify what they had already done.

He watched Victor disappear around the corner before heading in the opposite direction.

He needed to speak to Ash. Not because he expected Ash to have answers, but because he wanted to hear what someone else thought about the things they had seen.

Reina might notice details neither of them had considered, and Darius had already demonstrated that the Foundation’s official explanations could not always be trusted. For the first time, Markus was considering the possibility that the people around him might understand parts of the world that he did not.

The thought bothered him almost as much as the crystal itself.

Victor did not return to his office immediately.

He entered a small medical room reserved for senior personnel, entered his credentials into the diagnostic terminal, and locked the door behind him.

The room contained little beyond a diagnostic bed, a collection of sealed instruments, and a wall display connected to the Foundation’s internal medical network. It was not intended for emergencies.

Victor had insisted on having it installed because he disliked relying on other people for information about his own condition.

He removed his jacket and placed it over the back of a chair. As he rolled up his sleeve, he noticed a faint blue mark near his wrist.

At first, he assumed it was a reflection from the underground chamber. He turned his arm beneath the room’s lights, but the mark remained, a thin line beneath the skin that curved towards the base of his thumb. It was barely visible, yet it had not been there when he entered the crystal chamber.

Victor stared at it for several seconds before reaching for the diagnostic scanner.

The machine passed over his wrist with a quiet mechanical hum. A series of measurements appeared on the display, followed by a warning that made him narrow his eyes. He repeated the scan, adjusted the settings, and ran it a third time.

The result did not change.

He placed his arm on the diagnostic bed and initiated a deeper examination.

The screen filled with a layered image of tissue, blood vessels, and the underlying structure of his hand. At first, everything appeared normal.

Then the scanner isolated a small cluster of unfamiliar particles near the wrist, each one surrounded by a faint pattern of crystalline growth.

Victor leaned closer to the display. He knew the pattern. He had seen it in the records, in the lower laboratories, and in the bodies of people who had come into contact with Mark 8.

The early stages could be deceptive, sometimes remaining localised before spreading into surrounding tissue. The rate of progression varied between subjects, and the Foundation had never developed a reliable method for predicting every outcome.

He ran the examination again, this time extending it to his forearm.

The cluster had already spread farther than he expected.

Victor lowered his arm and looked at the small blue mark beneath his skin. His face remained composed, but his fingers curled against the edge of the bed until the joints whitened. It was an involuntary response, brief enough that he might have ignored it under different circumstances.

He had spent years studying Mark 8, controlling access to its research, and deciding which risks were acceptable.

He had watched people succumb to a process they could neither understand nor stop. Now the same process had entered his body, and he had no immediate explanation for how far it would progress.

His eyes shifted towards the sleeve of his discarded jacket.

A tiny blue fragment had caught in the fabric near the cuff. It was no larger than a grain of glass, and its sharp edge glimmered beneath the light.

Victor carefully removed it with a pair of instruments and placed it inside a sealed sample container. He could not be certain that it was the source of the infection, but the timing was too precise to ignore.

He opened the terminal and began reviewing the available data. The initial readings were inconclusive, offering little more than confirmation of the contamination and an estimate of its current spread.

He searched for comparable cases, narrowed the results to those involving direct exposure to crystalline material, and found himself staring at a list of outcomes he had once examined from the safety of a laboratory.

Some subjects had adapted. Others had deteriorated before the Foundation could intervene. A few records were too incomplete to establish what had happened at all.

Victor closed the list. He could notify the medical department and place himself under observation.

Doing so would immediately trigger a series of reports, restrict his access to certain facilities, and raise questions he was not prepared to answer.

The Foundation would begin treating him as a subject rather than its director. Every decision he made would be reviewed by people who had spent their careers waiting for an opportunity to challenge his authority.

Worse, Markus would find out.

Victor looked at the diagnostic image once more. The crystalline pattern had advanced slightly during the examination, extending into a narrow branch that followed the structure of a nearby blood vessel. The change was small, but it was measurable.

He shut down the scanner. There would be time to investigate the infection privately before deciding what to do.

Until he understood its behaviour, revealing the discovery would accomplish nothing except surrendering control of the situation. He had built his life around the principle that uncertainty was not a reason to act carelessly, and he would not abandon that principle now.

Victor removed the sample container from the machine and placed it inside a locked storage compartment. He then erased the temporary diagnostic session, checked the room for any remaining evidence, and pulled his sleeve back into place.

When he looked at his wrist again, the blue mark had darkened.

He covered it with his cuff.

Later that evening, Markus stood alone in his room, staring at the notes he had copied from the records before the lower levels collapsed into chaos.

The pages contained fragments of information about the survivors, the adapted subjects, and the experiments that had produced abilities the Foundation could barely explain.

He had arranged them across his desk in an attempt to find a pattern, but the more he read, the less certain he became about what the records actually proved.

One file described an experiment as successful because the subject had survived. Another classified a subject as a failure because the result could not be controlled. Nowhere did the documents explain what happened to the people who had been reduced to those conclusions, except in the coldest possible terms.

He picked up the photograph of the researcher who had died in the collapsing passage.

For a while, he simply held it between his fingers. Then he placed it face down on the desk and returned to the notes.

He told himself that the researcher would not have changed the outcome. Subject 014 had escaped, and the information he carried might prove essential to understanding the Foundation’s experiments.

Turning back could have meant losing him as well. The reasoning remained sound when Markus repeated it silently, yet he found that he no longer wanted to hear his own explanation.

He pushed the papers away and stood up.

Beyond the window, the Foundation’s grounds stretched beneath the darkening sky. The buildings were quiet, their lights shining against the glass, and everything appeared as orderly as it had before he descended into the lower levels.

The people working inside them would continue with their assignments, the researchers would record their results, and the Foundation would carry on as though nothing had changed.

But something had changed. Markus could feel it in the questions he had begun asking, in the answers he could no longer accept, and in the photograph he had turned face down without managing to forget it.

He looked towards the door, intending to find Ash before the evening ended.

Then he glanced at the papers once more.

He gathered them into a single stack, placed the photograph carefully on top, and left the room without looking back.

Deep beneath the Foundation, the enormous blue crystal remained undisturbed in its chamber.

And somewhere above it, concealed beneath the sleeve of the man who controlled the entire organisation, a thin line of blue continued to spread.
