Sorry.]

The night is deep.

All is silent.

On both sides of the road leading to the school dormitory, two rows of bare silver poplars stand tall under the dim lights, embodying the desolation of an autumn night.

When the chilly wind of October stirs them, there isn’t the rustling sound of summer, but rather a coarse, hoarse croaking, adding a chill to the cold night and prompting students walking at night to quicken their pace.

”Fate, do you really not want to clear your name?” Beside Fate, wearing black-rimmed glasses, a scholarly man with slanted bangs spoke slowly, ”People online are cursing you for being cold-hearted after seeing the video, saying you don’t deserve to be a university student.”

Fate shook his head.

”I don’t care.”

The man with slanted bangs continued, ”But surely you don’t want to carry the stigma forever? If you can prove the old lady who had a heart attack was a professional scammer, your name will be cleared... Fate, we’re only sophomores.”

Life is just beginning.

The rest of life, there is still a long way to go.

In the days to come, surely you can’t carry the stigma forever?

Fate responded coolly, ”No need, time will forget everything, as long as the school doesn’t expel me for not helping others.”

”I really don’t understand you.” The man with slanted bangs shook his head helplessly and quickly continued, ”I thought about it, why don’t we visit places? Since you know that the deceased old lady was a scammer, surely others have seen her scams.”

”You’re right, as long as you’re persistent in this city, you can find someone who knows the truth, but I don’t have the leisure.” Fate responded.

Rejecting his friend’s kind offer.

He truly didn’t care about the so-called stigma.

If he had to do it again, he would choose the same indifferent departure, not helping the old lady, even would quietly wait by her side for her to die of a heart attack.

Even if this act would cause a greater uproar online and make the keyboard warriors crazily attack him.

But he doesn’t care.

Because, soon enough, the peace and luck that ordinary humans have enjoyed since the Stone Age will end one day.

The lives of ordinary people will soon become worthless, and as for the life of a scamming old lady, people will deem it lighter than a feather. Likewise, those who tap on their keyboards and stand on moral high ground, the same will apply. ℯⅇ𝙡.

At that time, they will no longer have the heart to care about others, nor the mind to judge others, because just wanting to live decently and safely will become as unattainable as the meeting of the Cowherd and Weaver Girl.

Since a new era is about to dawn, and the harmonious world is destined to become a jungle of slaughter, why should he care about such reputations?

Better to continue improving himself before the era’s upheaval comes; only by becoming stronger can he live more freely in the new era.

Because he always believed that in today’s harmonious world, he’s definitely not the only Sequence God!

The man with slanted bangs smiled bitterly, ”I really don’t understand you. You clearly have ways to prove your innocence, but you’re just not willing to do it. If you don’t do it, then no one will want to help you prove your innocence.”

”We’ve arrived.”

Fate stopped.

The dormitory building had arrived.

On the branches of silver poplar trees behind them, a dense flock of black crows suddenly took flight, disappearing into the night with coarse, hoarse cries.

...

The eight-person dormitory was quiet.

To be precise, it became particularly quiet after Fate entered, because the other six chose to keep their distance from Fate.

Because after the video of Fate not helping led to the old lady dying of a heart attack caused an uproar online, his dorm mates were also somewhat affected, so they decided to keep their distance from him.

Fate understood this.

Because the people in the dormitory were also ordinary people, with their parents being mere common employees from small towns, wielding no power or influence.

In the face of such matters, they can only choose to move away silently.

After getting in bed, Fate opened his phone and glanced at the finance department’s 2023 chat group, and also browsed the local news account.

He wanted to see if the extremely audacious, even recklessly bold murderer had been caught yet.

Just ten days ago, a female classmate from the adjacent class was killed near a park beside the school upon returning late at night from off-campus. It was said her entire back was dissected like a butchered pig, and the murderer even removed her entire spine.

Fate specifically went there once, although the site was sealed off, he could still see a pool of dried blood on the ground.

It flowed along the cracks of the bricks, stretching for a full ten meters, before finally diving into a sewer beside the fitness path.

But on that day, Fate as a Sequence God didn’t hear any screams, which should not have been the case.

So whether the rumor is true or false is unknown.

But what’s true is after committing the crime, the murderer left a line of taunting words on the ground — Come catch me.

This sentence, like a fuse, instantly caused the Patroller system to ”explode”. All the Patrollers in Ye City moved, leaving no stone unturned to track every clue, vowing to bring the murderer to justice.

The tenth day since the incident was today.

Originally, Fate also wanted to help investigate, but unexpectedly encountered a scamming old lady, and after Fate left indifferently, the lady suddenly died of a heart attack at the scene. Being the only passerby at that time, he suddenly became the focal point of online criticism, with countless keyboard warriors denouncing him on the internet.

At the same time, it also impacted the real world, with the old lady’s family relentlessly besieging him, preventing him from having time to investigate this bizarre murder case. He thought after ten days, by rights, the true culprit should have been found.
