Breaking SSS-Rank Heroines

Jinhae

Ahyun appeared at my shoulder. Her face was pale above the mask.

I stepped over the bodies and into the gap.

Pale smoke still hung in the air. Visibility dropped to ten paces. Rough-hewn walls. Old timber supports at regular intervals. The floor was packed earth gone hard as stone from decades of boot traffic.

Bodies appeared almost immediately.

The first three lay in a heap where they had been sitting around a makeshift fire pit. Cards scattered. A jug of cheap rice wine tipped over, its contents pooling around limp fingers. One man still held a hand of painted tiles against his chest.

Beyond them, two more crumpled against the right wall. Weapons within arm’s reach. They hadn’t even had time to stand.

Seolhwa moved through them. A single thrust to the throat or the base of the skull for each one. Blood pooled, but the unconscious men never stirred.

I kept pace behind her, Ahyun close to my left side.

The mine branched twice. I took the left fork both times without hesitation.

“How do you know the way?” Seolhwa asked, voice muffled behind the mask.

“Old mining surveys in my family records.”

It wasn’t entirely a lie. The Kang archives did hold records from the mountain mining period. The fact that I had memorized the layout from a game guide’s top-down map was a detail she didn’t need.

The passage widened. More bodies. Six in a sleeping chamber. Bedrolls in rough rows. A rack of stolen weapons against the far wall. Seolhwa killed every one of them.

The smoke thinned as we went deeper but the men were already under. Some lay with their mouths open, breathing slow and wet. Others had collapsed mid-stride.

We hit the first antechamber.

The passage opened into a wider natural cavern. The ceiling rose. Old mining lanterns still burned from iron hooks set into the walls, casting long orange shadows across rough stone.

In the center stood a cage, iron bars bolted to the stone floor.

Inside the cage, Minji.

My legs stopped. She was naked.

Spring-green traveling robes torn and discarded in a pile outside the bars. Dirt and dried sweat. Bruises already darkening across her ribs and upper arms. Dark hair tangled and matted. She sat with her knees drawn up to her chest, arms wrapped around her shins, face buried between her kneecaps.

Four men lay unconscious around the cage.

One had his trousers half-unlaced. Another still held a length of rough rope in his slack fingers. A third lay with his face turned toward the bars, mouth open, one hand extended through the gap as if he had been reaching for her when the smoke took him.

Minji’s shoulders shook.

The smoke had thinned. Her eyes were half-open, glassy. Tears had carved clean tracks through the grime on her cheeks.

A thin broken sound leaked out of her.

I looked at Seolhwa.

“These four are mine.”

Her eyes went to the men, then back to me. She stepped off, letting me approach.

I reached inside my robe and drew a knife.

The man with the rope first. I caught his hair, tipped his chin, and opened his throat. The body jerked. Blood slapped the stone.

My hand shook.

I did the second. Same cut. Then the one reaching through the bars. Then the last.

I wiped the blade on a vest and slid it back into my robe.

The chamber went quiet except for Minji’s hitching breaths and the slow drip of blood.

I stepped forward.

The cage had a heavy iron padlock. I searched the bodies. Found a ring of keys on the belt of the man with the rope. Tried three before the lock clicked open.

I stepped inside.

“Minji.”

She flinched.

Her whole body contracted tighter. Arms squeezing her knees until the knuckles went white. A ragged whimper escaped.

I knelt in front of her.

“It’s me. It’s Hyung.”

Her head lifted an inch. Glassy eyes found my face above the dark mask.

The mask registered, then the voice under it. Her unfocused eyes found me. Her mouth opened.

“H-Hyu.”

The word collapsed into a sob.

She lunged forward. Arms wrapping around my neck with desperate strength. Bare skin pressing against my robes. She buried her face against my shoulder and shattered.

I held her.

One hand on the back of her head. The other across her trembling shoulders. I let her pour it out against my chest.

Seolhwa held the entrance. Ahyun stripped the outer robe from the nearest dead bandit, shook it as clean as she could, and brought it to me.

I draped it over Minji’s naked back without letting go.

She couldn’t speak. Every attempt at words dissolved into wet, choking babble.

“Hyu. They. I couldn’t. Mother. They took. I tried to—”

“I know,” I said. “I know. You’re safe now. I’m here.”

I looked over her shaking head at Seolhwa.

“Take her,” I said.

Seolhwa’s gaze snapped to mine.

“Get her out. Back to the horses. Keep her warm. Ahyun and I will handle the last chamber.”

I turned my head toward the deeper passage. One more door.

Lady Seo Yunhee was behind it.

Seolhwa sheathed both swords. She crossed the chamber, knelt, and gathered Minji onto her back. The dead bandit’s robe wrapped around the girl’s bare body. Minji’s arms locked around Seolhwa’s neck. Her face pressed into the cropped dark hair. The sobs continued, muffled now, but the grip held.

“I’ll be at the horses,” Seolhwa said.

She left without another word.

The sound of her boots faded down the corridor.

I stood.

Ahyun moved to my side. Her eyes were wet above the mask but her voice came out steady.

“Young Master. The last room.”

I looked at the passage ahead.

Lady Seo was behind the next door.
