Blood and Mud

Chapter 42: Chapter 42

The cold woke me.

No slow drift up out of sleep — my eyes just snapped open into the void. The stone floor had pulled the heat out of my muscles while I lay there, and my joints answered slow and stiff for it. I stayed still, listening. Somewhere off in the dark, the lake kept up its rhythmic, maddening drip. Nothing else moved.

I sat up. My spine popped in the cold. Hunger had its teeth in my stomach — not the dull kind, the kind that hollows you out. The Swelled Bud had built me an adult body, dense with muscle, and that kind of engine needed real fuel. I didn’t have much of it left.

I unbuttoned the pouch at my back, found the second hardtack block by touch — rigid, crumbling at the edges — and broke it exactly in half. Forced the dry paste down my throat, chewing through it, washing the whole mess down with a long pull of freezing, iron-tasting water.

One and a half days of food left.

I stood, rolled my shoulders to shake the stiffness loose, and drew the sword. Steel hissed against the scabbard. A small surge of Ember into the metal, and the runes answered — a weak, erratic crackle of blue sparks, just enough light to catch the shoreline and the tunnel mouth beyond it, sloping down into the earth.

I left the fungi glow behind me.

The descent was brutal — limestone giving way underfoot to broken, jagged shale that shifted with every step. The air thickened, stagnant, heavy with sulfur and wet rot and something underneath, sharp and metallic. I went quiet, left hand trailing the wall, sparking the blade every dozen paces just to be sure the floor was still there.

Hours went by. Nothing to look at, nothing to hear but my own footsteps — that kind of silence gets into your skull after a while.

My boot came down on something soft.

I stopped dead. Whatever it was, it didn’t clatter like stone underfoot. It crunched.

Sword up, runes flared. Blue light hit the tunnel floor.

A husk. Translucent, easily the size of a warhorse, split clean down the center — a molted shell, thick fluid still oozing out of it, hissing faintly where it touched bare rock. The chitin’s edges were jagged, ringed with hundreds of hollow, jointed leg-casings.

The sparks died. Dark came crashing back down.

I didn’t freeze. Didn’t waste a second running or picking apart what kind of creature could shed something this size. My body coiled on its own — low stance, sword up in a two-handed guard, every sense straining against the black.

Something moved, directly above me.

Skitter-skitter. Hiss.

Not the clumsy drop the spider had managed. This was fast and coordinated, moving over smooth stone like it had done this a thousand times.

I flared the runes wide and threw the light up.

The ceiling was swarming.

Coming down at me: forty feet of segmented, dark crimson chitin. A centipede, armored, hundreds of barbed legs churning the air, a head that was nothing but clicking mandibles and corrosive slime.

It hit the ground like a siege engine landing. The shale just gave way.

It lunged, head first, like a battering ram given legs. I twisted clear, sidestepped — and its armored snout hit the wall right where I’d been standing half a second earlier. Stone cracked. Debris rained across my shoulders.

Fast. Faster than something that size had any right to be, and the force behind that hit was staggering — like taking a swing from a Dormant Bud heavy infantryman wrapped in unbreakable shell.

It whipped its body around, legs tearing grooves into the rock, and its mandibles cracked open — a jet of thick green liquid came at my face.

I dropped, threw myself into a roll. The stuff hit the wall behind me instead, and the stone started bubbling, smoking, filling the tunnel with vapor that burned going down my throat.

It didn’t slow down. It came after me through its own smoke, mandibles snapping inches off my boots.

I planted my back foot, pulled the Swelled Bud’s heat into my arms, and swung the sword in a flat, hard arc.

Steel hit the side of its head and the shock of it ran up both arms, rattled my teeth in my skull. The blade didn’t cut — just bounced clean off that crimson armor. But the runes didn’t need the cut. They discharged anyway — a bolt of static tore into whatever passed for its nervous system.

It shrieked — a high, grinding, mechanical sound, nothing alive should make. The front segments locked up, legs curling inward as the shock tore through whatever muscle it had.

I didn’t hesitate. Flipped my grip, drove the pommel into the cluster of black eyes above its mandibles. Chitin cracked. Dark fluid sheeted over my gauntlets.

It thrashed — blind, agonized, its whole body convulsing — and the tail caught me across the ribs before I saw it coming.

The hit lifted me right off my feet. I hit the far wall and the breath left me all at once. Vision swam. I went down hard, tasting blood.

It was already shaking off the charge. Reared up again, broken eyes leaking fluid down its face, mandibles clicking fast — too fast, some frenzied rhythm I didn’t like the look of.

I got up, ribs screaming, and didn’t waste time on the pain. The armor wasn’t going to break. I needed a joint, someplace soft.

It lunged down to crush me and I didn’t pull back — I went forward instead, sliding on my knees across the wet stone, underneath its rearing head. Its underbelly opened up above me, pale and unarmored, and I drove the sword up into it with everything I had.

Steel found the soft tissue between armor plates. I buried it to the crossguard and twisted.

And let everything the runes had go into its organs.

The whole cavern lit up, strobing blue, blinding. Forty feet of centipede locked rigid, head to tail. Smoke started pouring out of every joint in its armor, the tunnel filling fast with the smell of ozone and burnt flesh. I held the blade in, kept feeding it Ember, until the whole thing finally went limp and came down on top of me.

I ripped the blade free, scrambled out from under the weight of the carcass before it could pin me for good. Stood there in the dark, chest heaving, the blade still sparking, faint, dying.

Wiped sweat and something that wasn’t my blood out of my eyes.

The silence lasted exactly three seconds.

The skittering came back before I’d caught my breath. Not from the ceiling this time — from the tunnel ahead. And not one creature. Many.

Click-clack. Sssshk. Click-clack.

I pushed what charge I had left into the sword and threw a wide arc of light down the corridor.

What came pouring out of the dark wasn’t one creature — it was a swarm, dozens of them, each the size of a hunting hound, wrapped in shell black as obsidian. Mandibles too big for their bodies, serrated like saw blades. They moved together, synchronized, horribly efficient, swarming over stone and wall alike in one living wave of snapping jaws.

Same unnatural density as the centipede. Whatever magic built this place had built them too.

Both hands on the sword. No retreating up the slope — the centipede’s carcass blocked the only path back. Wall at my spine. Nowhere else to go.

The first beetle jumped.

I met it mid-air, brought the blade down in a hard overhead strike that smashed through the shell. The charge fried it before it landed. My shoulders took the jolt anyway.

Two more came from the sides before the first one hit the ground.

I kicked the left one square in the thorax, sent it crashing into a stalagmite, and spun to catch the second across my body. Steel met its serrated mandibles head-on. The strength behind it didn’t make sense for something that size — it leaned into the lock, trying to bite through the steel.

I dropped my shoulder instead of fighting it, let its own weight carry it past me, and drove the pommel into its exposed back. The shell cracked. I finished it on the way down.

The swarm surged in.

No geometry left in it now, no math—just its rhythm, hit after hit after hit.

I fought like something running on empty, hacking and bashing and shocking anything that came close enough. This adult frame ate hits that would’ve shattered every bone I had at fourteen. Then a beetle clamped down on my left thigh — serrated teeth punching straight through leather and into meat.

The pain went white for a second. I didn’t scream — didn’t have the air to spare for it. Drove the crossguard into its eyes, felt the skull give, and kicked the carcass off me twitching. Blood ran down my leg, mixing into mud and whatever the beetles bled onto the stone.

I used what terrain I had — sidestepped until the beetles had to bottleneck between the wall and a stalagmite, funneled them into a kill zone barely wide enough for one at a time. Let the runes paralyze whatever hit the front of the line, and butchered them there, one after another, systematic about it.

My breath tore in and out, ragged, scalding on the way down. The Ember burned hot and furious in my chest, eating through what little fuel I had left just to keep my arms moving.

I swung until my arms felt like lead, crushing shells, severing limbs, not really counting anymore.

The last beetle went down with the blade splitting its carapace clean in half.

I stood there in the bottleneck, boxed in by a small mountain of twitching, smoking chitin. Nothing left in the tunnel but the ragged sound of my own breathing.

I sagged against the wall and slid down until I hit the floor. The sword settled across my knees, sparks finally dying out, and the void swallowed the cavern whole again.

I pressed a hand against the wound on my thigh. Deep, but nothing arterial — I’d have known by now if it were. Tore a strip off the hem of my ruined tunic, wrapped it tight around the leg, and pulled the knot shut with my teeth.

The exhaustion was total — every muscle trembling, nothing left in reserve. The Swelled Bud had kept me alive, but it didn’t come cheap. All that kinetic and magical output had burned through what little I’d eaten, and the hunger was back already, sharper than before.

I sat there in the dark, corpses of mutated things all around me, ozone and acid still burning in my nose.

I tightened the bandage, gripped the sword, and made myself stand back up in the black.

The only way out was down.
