ARK SPIRIT

The moment Hao Nhien stepped through the cave entrance, a cold current brushed across his face. It was not strong enough to force him back, nor was it as chaotic as the intersecting winds over the stone field outside. Yet there was something distinctly different about it, something sharp, clean, and steady enough to make him slow without thinking.

The spiritual qi carried within the wind was also somewhat denser than outside. He stood still for several breaths, letting the current pass over his face, neck, and sleeves while sensing the faint response of the true qi within the meridians of his legs and waist. If this were merely the lingering aura of the Gray Shadow Wolf King, then after the Beast King’s death, those fluctuations should have gradually weakened or fallen into disorder. Instead, the wind continued to flow with remarkable consistency, as though it had followed the same pattern for a very long time.

Rather than draw a conclusion too quickly, Hao Nhien continued deeper into the cave.

The passage was narrow at first, then gradually widened. Claw marks of every size overlapped across the stone walls. Some were still sharp, while others had been worn so smooth by time and constant airflow that they nearly blended into the rock itself. Small cracks along the walls continually fed wind into the passage, sending currents sweeping sideways or pressing down from above. Some traveled only a few feet before striking a protruding rock and changing direction.

In the past, he probably would have dismissed all of it as nothing more than wind moving through a cave. But after spending days studying the Gray Shadow Wolf King’s beast core and repeatedly testing how to borrow existing force, he had begun to see those currents differently.

Wind did not disappear when it encountered an obstacle. It was forced to change direction. The narrower the gap, the more compressed the airflow became and the faster it moved. Behind larger rocks, weaker pockets of air often formed before giving rise to small counterrotating vortices. Concepts that had once existed only as memories from his former world now became far clearer when his own body was placed directly among those moving currents.

He slowed to feel them more carefully. From the changing pitch of the wind through different cracks, the pressure sliding across his skin, and the subtle fluttering of his sleeves, he could gradually estimate where the passage widened, where it narrowed, and where several currents crossed. Once he had begun to understand how force moved, signs that would once have gone unnoticed suddenly carried meaning.

“No wonder the Gray Shadow Wolf King chose this place.”

His fingers brushed across a claw mark polished smooth by years of airflow, but another question followed almost at once. Was simply living here long enough really sufficient?

The way the Gray Shadow Wolf King had used the wind was clearly far more refined than anything the rest of the pack displayed. It did more than run with favorable currents. It could slip away from the strongest line of force, change direction in an instant, and counterattack precisely when its opponent lost balance. If absorbing the wind-aspected spiritual qi of this place were all it took, the wolves outside should not have differed so greatly from their King.

Hao Nhien set the question aside for the moment. Not long afterward, the passage abruptly opened into a vast stone cavern deep within the mountain.

The ceiling rose high overhead, pierced by numerous narrow cracks leading outside. Pale moonlight entered through several larger openings, illuminating little more than jagged stone and countless claw marks across the walls. Wind poured in from several directions: one current descended from above, another came through the passage behind him, while others entered from cracks on both sides and changed course after striking the walls.

At first glance, everything appeared chaotic. Yet after standing near the entrance and observing for a while, he realized the currents were not entirely without order. Most of them were being drawn toward the deeper part of the cavern, where a broad stone platform projected from the wall.

The platform was large enough for a massive demonic beast to rest upon. Its surface had been worn unnaturally smooth, while deep claw marks surrounded it, some large enough to fit an entire hand inside. Hao Nhien needed no explanation to know that this had once been the resting place of the Gray Shadow Wolf King.

But the platform was not empty.

A Gray Shadow Wolf lay upon it.

Its body was considerably larger than any second rank wolf Hao Nhien had encountered before. Thick gray-silver fur covered its frame, and the strip running down its spine had faded almost completely toward white. Its forelegs were powerful, curved claws resting against the stone, while the aura around it had clearly reached the peak of the second rank.

What interested Hao Nhien most, however, was where the beast had chosen to lie. It rested at the exact point where several of the strongest air currents converged.

When he stepped fully into the cavern, the wolf’s red eyes opened. It did not roar or rush down at once. Instead, it rose, walked to the edge of the platform, and looked down at him from above. The silver fur along its body stirred in the wind, yet its stance remained unusually stable, as though this environment had long since become second nature.

A thought surfaced in Hao Nhien’s mind.

The successor.

With the King dead, the strongest remaining wolf had claimed its platform, the place with the densest spiritual qi, and the position that once belonged to the ruler of the pack. Perhaps it was simply waiting for the day when it became strong enough to truly take the old King’s place.

The Gray Shadow Wolf lowered its head and released a deep growl. Hao Nhien rested a hand on the hilt of the Tieu Dao Sword. He wanted to go deeper into the cave, while the beast clearly had no intention of giving way.

The instant the Tieu Dao Sword left its sheath, the gray-silver body atop the platform sank low. The current descending from above tore apart, and the wolf launched itself forward along the exact direction of the wind pouring down from the platform.

It was far faster than Hao Nhien had expected.

He barely managed to tilt aside before the claws swept across his left shoulder, ripping through his robe and opening a deep line of blood. He retreated three steps before regaining his footing, but the beast gave him no time to settle. It circled right, forcing him by instinct to move left. The moment his foot touched down, a backflow from a crack in the wall swept across his waist and shifted his balance by half a beat.

Silver claws were already in front of him.

Hao Nhien raised the Tieu Dao Sword horizontally. The collision rang sharply through the cavern, and the force traveling down his arm numbed his wrist. He had barely begun to turn away when the wolf’s long tail whipped across, driving him back several more steps until his shoulder struck the stone wall.

The pain had not yet faded when the Gray Shadow Wolf disappeared behind a nearby stone pillar. Hao Nhien shifted his weight to the right by reflex, but this time he guessed wrong. A strong pressure rushed in from behind, forcing him to duck just as claws swept over his hair. His counterthrust only brushed the fur at the tip of the beast’s tail before it escaped his reach.

He continued giving ground, his breathing growing heavier. What troubled him was not merely that his opponent was stronger. The entire cavern seemed to favor the beast. The walls, narrow gaps, stone pillars, currents descending from above, and compressed backflows between the rock faces were all things it had known for far longer than he had, while he was being forced to understand them in the middle of battle.

Most of Hao Nhien’s movement training had taken place in relatively open spaces. Riverbanks, waterfalls, mountain slopes, and forests might all be complicated terrain, but they still gave him room to correct mistakes. If a current came at the wrong angle, he could retreat another step. If his balance shifted, he had space to turn. If his judgment came too late, he could force his body back into position with true qi.

Inside this cavern, small errors were magnified. Lean too far and his shoulder might slam into the wall. Retreat one step too many and he might enter a backflow. Avoiding the claws in front of him did not guarantee that he would escape the current rebounding from the stone beside him.

The Gray Shadow Wolf attacked again. Hao Nhien slipped aside, only for a current from a crack above to press down and make his foot slide. The claws tore through the side of his robe, leaving behind a long burning wound as blood began to soak through the fabric.

This time, however, the frustration he had felt earlier was gone. A new thought surfaced, and his eyes brightened.

Perhaps he had been looking at the problem the wrong way.

This place was not obstructing what he had learned. It was precisely because the space was narrow that the wind was compressed through cracks, forced into new directions by walls, divided by stone pillars, and drawn into vortices by small pockets of open space. Every change was stronger, clearer, and harder to ignore than it had been outside.

In open terrain, a flawed judgment could still be compensated for with speed or true qi. Here, every mistake demanded payment in blood.

More importantly, standing in front of him was a peak second rank Gray Shadow Wolf that had lived in this cavern long enough for the use of these currents to become instinctive.

Hao Nhien looked at the beast standing more than ten paces away and suddenly laughed.

The Gray Shadow Wolf King’s beast core had only recently opened a new way for him to understand wind. Over the past several days, he had repeatedly tested how to reduce wasted force, borrow momentum, and recognize the direction of airflow. Now he had entered a place where every current was clearer than ever before, while an opponent stood before him demonstrating how those currents could actually be used.

Danger and opportunity had truly arrived together.

A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

He wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, adjusted his stance, and steadied his breathing. His state of mind shifted with it. Hao Nhien no longer thought about defeating the wolf as quickly as possible so that he could continue deeper into the cave. This battle had become a rare opportunity, one he might not encounter again once he left this place.

“All right.” His grip tightened around the Tieu Dao Sword. “Let’s try again.”

The Gray Shadow Wolf moved first. It circled left, then abruptly changed direction, using a compressed current between two walls to accelerate. This time, Hao Nhien did not retreat by instinct. He watched the way the fur over the beast’s shoulder flattened, saw the dust beneath its paws being drawn aside, and felt a cold current brush his wrist.

Only when the claws closed in did he move.

The attack still grazed his chest and opened another line of blood, but the wound was shallower than before. What he gained was far more valuable. As the beast passed through the narrowest point between the walls, the supporting current behind it split to either side, causing the extra force at its back to vanish. For a brief instant, the wolf had to adjust its body on its own.

Hao Nhien did not counterattack. He wanted to see more.

The next time the Gray Shadow Wolf came down from the platform, he noticed how the air from a crack overhead pressed along its spine and helped drive its body downward. When the claws were about to reach him, he angled his shoulder with that downward pressure instead of resisting it. His sleeve still tore, but the impact was considerably weaker.

On the third exchange, the beast once again used a stone pillar to hide its movement before changing direction. Hao Nhien no longer followed its body with his eyes. Instead, he shifted his attention to the airflow behind the pillar. A vortex was being drawn inward. If the wolf intended to use that current, the directions from which it could emerge would also be limited.

He moved half a beat early.

The claws had barely appeared when the Tieu Dao Sword was already there. Instead of striking with force, Hao Nhien used the blade to deflect the attack and push the beast away from its favorable current. The gray-silver body lost its rhythm for a brief moment, and the tip of his sword immediately cut across its foreleg.

Blood splashed onto the stone floor.

The Gray Shadow Wolf growled and withdrew. Hao Nhien did not pursue. There was no triumph in his eyes, only growing excitement. The cavern was giving him clearer feedback than any place he had ever trained before, forcing things that had once been vague to take on concrete form.

The wolf circled left again and deliberately entered a narrow current trapped between two rock faces. Hao Nhien recognized the path of the wind and moved ahead of it, intending to occupy the weaker region at the end of the current and force the beast to change direction.

His judgment was not wrong.

But it was only half right.

Just before committing to its charge, the wolf suddenly whipped its tail hard against the nearby wall. A heavy sound rolled through the cavern. The once stable current was disrupted, and the backflow changed direction with it.

Hao Nhien had just stepped into what he believed was the safe position when pressure struck from the side, dragging his center of gravity away from the line he had calculated. In that brief instant, the opening he had been relying on disappeared.

The Gray Shadow Wolf’s claws were already in front of his chest.

This time, he could not evade in time.

The claws tore across his side, cutting deeper than any of the previous wounds. Blood poured out, and the sudden pain caught his breath in his chest. Hao Nhien forcibly circulated true qi and drove himself backward, finally planting the Tieu Dao Sword against the ground to stop himself from falling.

The Gray Shadow Wolf did not pursue. It stood at a distance, red eyes fixed on him.

Hao Nhien looked down at the wound along his side. After a moment, he laughed again, though there was nothing light about the expression this time.

He had just understood something even more important.

The wind within the cavern was not made of fixed paths drawn in advance for him to memorize. The stone walls shaped the currents, but moving bodies, collisions, and attacks constantly changed them as well.

If he reduced this place to a dead diagram inside his mind, sooner or later that very diagram would get him killed.

He straightened.

Both his shoulder and side hurt, and his true qi had been depleted far more quickly than expected, but the excitement in his chest had not diminished. If anything, that last strike had made his understanding clearer.

He did not need to memorize every current.

He needed to understand how those currents changed.

From then on, the battle shifted into a different rhythm. The Gray Shadow Wolf still knew the cavern better than he did and remained both faster and stronger, but Hao Nhien no longer tried to predict every exact path it would take. He accepted that the airflow itself would change, then watched those changes as they happened: dust lifting from the ground, fur flattening against the beast’s body, and pressure against his skin shifting just before a vortex took shape.

He still guessed wrong at times and paid for it, but his successful judgments became more frequent. The Tieu Dao Sword opened a cut across the wolf’s foreleg, another over its shoulder, and later a slash along its flank. None were fatal, but together they gradually reduced its speed. Hao Nhien, meanwhile, grew increasingly tired, yet his movement became more natural. He no longer forced every step, instead learning when to relax, when only a fraction of true qi was needed, and when to let existing momentum continue rather than stopping it too soon.

There were moments when he almost forgot that he was trying to comprehend anything at all. He simply fought, observed, and allowed the wolf and the cavern itself to continue teaching him.

The Gray Shadow Wolf once again seized the current descending from the platform and rushed down. This time Hao Nhien did not retreat. He stepped diagonally toward the edge of the airflow, forcing his opponent to alter its angle, then shifted half a step toward a pocket of lower pressure behind a protruding rock. The wolf was driven away from its favorable path, its speed dropping just enough for the Tieu Dao Sword to sweep across its shoulder.

When the beast turned and charged again, Hao Nhien suddenly realized he was no longer sensing the surrounding currents as separate pieces. The downward flow from above, the backflow along the left wall, the vortex behind the stone pillar, and the weak pocket between two stronger currents were beginning to connect in his perception.

A current forced left by the wall did not disappear. It became the backflow farther behind. Wind descending from a crack struck the ground and divided to either side. A powerful current that seemed to end had merely changed direction.

Wind did not merely have direction.

It had a path.

And those paths could always change.

Hao Nhien gradually understood that once the Gray Shadow Wolf chose a current to accelerate through, its next options narrowed, but they never became completely fixed. He did not need to become faster than his opponent. He only needed to recognize the change one beat earlier.

From that point onward, the wolf’s home ground advantage was no longer absolute. It still forced Hao Nhien to bleed, but every time it tried to reclaim a favorable current, it now faced an opponent who had begun to understand how to contest position. Sometimes he moved first and claimed the better point. Sometimes he deliberately yielded the stronger current and waited where it weakened. At other times, he even used the wolf’s own charge to alter the airflow around them.

The prolonged battle left both sides wounded.

The hand holding Hao Nhien’s sword had begun to tremble faintly from exhaustion, while the wound along his side sent pain through every deep breath. The Gray Shadow Wolf was no longer as fast as it had been at the beginning either. Blood dripped from its foreleg and shoulder, making its movements heavier with every exchange.

At last, the beast returned to the stone platform.

All four paws struck the smooth surface as its body lowered and its aura grew more violent. Wind poured down along its spine, gathering into the strongest current within the entire cavern.

When Hao Nhien had first entered, he would certainly have retreated.

Now he remained where he was.

Not because he was certain he would win, but because he finally understood enough to know when he needed to move.

The Gray Shadow Wolf charged.

The distance vanished with frightening speed. Hao Nhien held his position until the descending current reached its strongest point and began to split to either side.

At the moment the pressure ahead weakened, he turned his foot, lowered his shoulder, and shifted his center of gravity sideways.

The wind behind him brushed across his back at exactly the right moment. It did not lift him or carry his body through the air, but it reduced the force required for that change in position by just enough.

The claws slammed into the stone where Hao Nhien had been standing, scattering fragments across the cavern floor.

Before the Gray Shadow Wolf could recover, the Tieu Dao Sword was already resting beneath its throat.

Man and beast became still.

Hao Nhien breathed heavily, his sword hand trembling from exhaustion, but the blade did not move from its position. The Gray Shadow Wolf bared its teeth and released a low growl. After several breaths, it slowly backed away, keeping its eyes fixed on him until enough distance had opened between them. Only then did it turn and disappear into a dark side passage.

He did not pursue.

In his present condition, driving a peak second rank demonic beast into a desperate fight merely for thirty examination points would have been a foolish trade. The path ahead was still unknown, and what he had gained from this battle was already worth far more than another beast core.

Only after the wolf completely disappeared did Hao Nhien lower the Tieu Dao Sword. The moment his body relaxed, all the pain he had suppressed during the fight came rushing back. Blood still seeped from his left shoulder, his side throbbed with every breath, and a long claw mark ran across his thigh, yet he merely looked down at the stains covering his robe and smiled.

The battle had injured him badly, but in exchange, things that had once been vague had finally become concrete. He understood much more clearly why the Gray Shadow Wolf King’s use of wind had always felt so different from that of the rest of its pack, while also realizing that he had only touched the outermost layer of whatever lay behind that difference.

Hao Nhien applied Hemostatic Powder to the wounds that were still bleeding and drank a small mouthful of Qi Recovery Liquid. Much of his true qi had been spent, yet after several circulations, its movement became smoother than before, especially through the meridians of his legs and waist.

The eighth layer of Qi Condensation, already near its limit, now felt even fuller. The resistance ahead had thinned to the point that Hao Nhien sensed that if he found a sufficiently safe place, regulated his breathing once more, and released the final restraint, his true qi might naturally find its way into the ninth layer.

But this was not the time.

His gaze returned to the stone platform.

The peak second rank Gray Shadow Wolf had lived here long enough to become familiar with the cavern’s currents, yet its use of wind still relied mainly on choosing the strongest available path and accelerating through it.

The Gray Shadow Wolf King had been different.

That difference could not be explained by simply lying on the same stone platform for a longer period of time.

Hao Nhien stepped onto it.

As soon as he stood there, he could feel that the surrounding spiritual qi was denser than below. Several currents converged at the platform before spreading throughout the cavern, and over countless years they had polished its surface smooth.

He crouched and placed a hand against the stone.

There was no formation.

No spiritual treasure.

Nor was there any sign that this was the true source of the wind-aspected spiritual qi.

Hao Nhien raised his head.

If the Gray Shadow Wolf King had been the source of this place, the wind should not have continued flowing so steadily after its death. And if simply resting on this platform were enough, the successor he had just fought could not have differed so greatly from the former King.

That meant the Gray Shadow Wolf King might have been benefiting from this place just as the others did.

He began examining the area around the platform more carefully. After a while, his gaze settled on a narrow dark opening several zhang above and behind it. The gap was so small that it would have been difficult to notice from anywhere else, yet cold currents continuously flowed out from within.

Hao Nhien did not climb toward it yet.

He remained still and felt the airflow several more times.

Then something strange happened.

Two currents emerged from the dark opening at the same moment and separated toward opposite sides, sliding along the walls before curving back behind the stone platform. After a brief interval, they drew inward and closed again in almost perfect unison.

Hao Nhien unconsciously straightened.

He had sensed this same structure during the battle, but the chaos of claws, blood, and movement had allowed him to retain only a vague impression.

Now, standing on the platform with no attacks rushing toward him and no beast growling in his ears, the rhythm became much clearer.

The two currents opened outward, drew back together, and then opened once more.

Hao Nhien stared at the dark opening behind the platform for a long time as a strange feeling gradually took shape within him, one he could not yet put into words.

It was as though the entire cavern had been repeating the same movement over and over again.
