Chapter 597: Chapter 498: The First Lesson_1

”What do you mean?”

Rarely speaking up, Beelzebub didn’t mind Huai Shi playing the straight man, ”Are you suggesting there’s something fishy going on here?”

”Isn’t there?”

Beelzebub burst into arrogant laughter. ”If I were the vice-principal, I’d plant a squad of ambushers in the classroom. The moment I saw you walk in, I’d just smash a cup as the signal...”

”Cut it out, be serious.”

Huai Shi rolled his eyes, interrupting him, ”I’ve told you to cut down on reading ’Tong Lin Legends’.”

”’Tong Lin Legends’ is history. Your Master Ma has recently taken a liking to listening about the Sui and Tang dynasties,” Beelzebub complained. ”When he heard the part about a horse that could hide its tail in its butt to use as a hidden weapon, the eager look on its face was so embarrassing—can’t you talk to it about that?”

”I’ll get him on a diet someday.”

Huai Shi scratched his head helplessly.

In fact, he knew all too well what Beelzebub meant. It was nothing more than what he himself had thought: that the vice-principal’s arrangement might not be solely for the purpose of promoting newcomers after all.

This was a major class that the whole school and all grades attended. There could be hundreds, if not thousands, of students below the rostrum. Understanding the fundamental importance of the course ’Abyssal Ecology’ was meant to save their lives at critical moments when they would work on Abyssal development in the future.

Such a critical and serious course. If taught well, it might not get one noticed. However, a single slip-up, any trouble, would be a calamity I, as a newcomer, couldn’t withstand. Power without virtue begets disaster. My own knowledge and abilities weren’t up to the task, so it would be nothing short of humiliating. At that point, wouldn’t it be easy for the vice-principal to manipulate me however he wished? But would I refuse?

”I think it’s quite good,” Huai Shi calmly replied. ”At the very least, it gives me a bigger chance to enter the teaching research office, right?”

”What if it goes wrong?”

”Then it goes wrong. Otherwise, relying on the elective ’Classical Music Appreciation’, who knows how much effort it would take to get into the teaching research office.”

Huai Shi nonchalantly washed his hands and casually asked, ”By the way, you’re finally daring to speak up?”

”Why wouldn’t I dare to speak?” Beelzebub angrily retorted, ”This is called conserving strength and storing up energy! Do you understand conserving strength?”

”So why don’t you make a peep when Raven’s around?”

”I... I was so sleepy, is that a problem?” Beelzebub had just finished retorting when he added another line, ”I’m sleepy, don’t talk to me, going to sleep, good night, 88!”

Then there was no sound anymore.

Huai Shi shrugged, dried his hands, and then turned to leave.

He had to tidy up the classroom that afternoon.

He’d had a quick lunch with Lin Nineteen outside at noon, and then they hurried to the temporary classroom assigned to them by the academic affairs office.

Arriving downstairs, they saw a bustling crowd.

However, most of the people were holding textbooks for Electrical Studies and Border Law, and many were clutching schedules for Emergency First Aid and the Sculpture Department. Passing by, Huai Shi noticed that the classrooms for Abyssal Photography and Hell Philosophy already had students studying in them, and the Border Law classroom was already fully seated.

I couldn’t help feeling a genuine surge of envy. If not for a conflicting schedule, I would have really liked to attend the Border Law class. This course was incredibly popular; just learning a bit and getting a license meant one could be worry-free about food and drink for life.

Because of the unique environments and various other factors at different borders, laws beyond the fundamental ones often differed greatly. They could even be completely distinct from one border to another. Even certain active large groups had their own legal systems. As long as outsiders abided by their edicts, there was room for barter... And if one was shrewd, there was much to be exploited within these radically different legal codes, especially when a business with substantial capital wanted to operate across borders...

It could be said that those coming here to study, much like the students in the accounting and valuation classes next door, had left their consciences behind. One and all, they aimed to serve capitalists once they’d mastered their arts. They weren’t even graduated yet and were already preparing to find loopholes. Their theses were never made public. It was said these theses were compilations of bugs identified by students over the years, intended to be their bread and butter in the future.

Thinking about this, Huai Shi felt a pang of nostalgia.

I wonder where Little Cat has been hanging out recently and how the good brothers at the Department of Justice are doing—I haven’t heard any news from Little Cat Paradise for a long time. Presumably, after shaking off the shackles of Xiematai, those guys must now be in some Hell, raking in royalties like fish in water, right? I regret leaving in such a hurry back then, not having had the chance to get contact information from the good brothers at the Department of Justice.

Huai Shi sighed and moved his gaze away from the Border Law classroom, nodded politely to the teacher coming to class, and turned back towards his own classroom—then he saw Lin Nineteen, agape.

”What’s wrong?” Huai Shi asked.

”T-Teacher... the classroom... the classroom, it...” Lin Nineteen pointed behind him at the ajar door, his face flushed red, ”It... it...”

”Is there a problem?”

Bewildered, Huai Shi became vigilant, ”Don’t tell me there aren’t even desks and chairs? Those guys are really heartless to stifle me like this. Don’t bully the youngster... Damn it!”

After opening the door, he himself was startled.

There wasn’t a single problem with the classroom. In fact, it had been specially adjusted for Huai Shi. The walls and doors were covered in a layer of soundproofing material, the interior tiered seats had been readjusted, and the lectern was directly fashioned into a concert stage style, convenient for his teaching.
