Chapter 1377: Chapter 13: Mercenary

The town is called Nanzhang Town, where two families reside, one is the Nan Family, and the other is the Zhang Family.

It is said that both families have considerable backgrounds, which allows them to control Nanzhang Town.

These two families have recruited many martial artists, some of whom have outstanding prowess.

With these two families guarding Nanzhang Town, not even fierce beasts dare to enter.

Along the way, many people could be seen entering Nanzhang Town, much like Lin Feng and his group, to exchange various items like Fire Pattern Stones, beast skins, or occasionally collected Spiritual Medicine for food in Nanzhang Town.

Nanzhang Town is bustling with people coming and going. Upon arrival, Lin Feng took four pieces of beast skin, intending to sell them discreetly. The people from the mountain village should not be exposed, as it could bring disaster upon them.

Zhang Danian and others were well aware that if they tried to sell the beast skins themselves, they would definitely attract a lot of attention. These are fierce beast skins, not ordinary animal hides, and fierces beast skins fetch prices hundreds or even thousands of times higher than ordinary ones. Zhang Danian and the others clearly lacked the ability to protect such valuable skins.

After parting ways with Zhang Danian and the others, Lin Feng headed towards the marketplace, the center for transactions.

In one corner of the marketplace, many were selling beast skins, though most were from ordinary animals.

Animal skins could be made into clothing, like mink coats, which were quite popular among the rich and noble. Wearing a mink coat not only shows status but also gives face.

Clothes made from fierce beast skins have great defensive power, even better than many body armors, and are highly favored. However, not just anyone can afford these garments due to their exorbitant price.

Lin Feng found a spot and laid out the fearsome skins of the Double-headed Blood Wolf, Evil Snake, Shadow Leopard, and Jiaowei Tiger before him.

”Look, it’s fierce beast hides!”

”The skin of a Double-headed Blood Wolf, a Shadow Leopard hide, and even a Jiaowei Tiger pelt!”

”Oh my God, such a large snake skin; could it be the skin of a Three-Eyed Evil Snake?”

...

Seeing the four kinds of beast skins, many people gathered around, pointing and discussing, all with expressions of immense shock.

Fierce beast skins are relatively rare.

To bring out four types at once, including one from a dominator level beast like the Evil Snake, is even more astounding.

”Young brother, how much for the hides?” someone immediately asked.

The speaker was a middle-aged, overweight man in a brocade suit, who looked like a businessman.

Lin Feng had already inquired with Zhang Danian prior that the currency in this world is gold coins, silver coins, and copper coins.

One gold coin exchanges for one hundred silver coins.

One silver coin exchanges for one hundred copper coins.

Ten copper coins could buy one hundred pounds of grain.

Zhang Danian wasn’t sure about the price of fierce beasts, but he once saw someone selling the skin of a Red-eyed Demon Lion for ten gold coins.

Although Lin Feng had never seen a Red-eyed Demon Lion, he guessed that it might be similar to the Jiaowei Tiger.

The Double-headed Blood Wolf and Shadow Leopard were slightly weaker than the Jiaowei Tiger.

As for the Evil Snake, it was noticeably more formidable, likely three to four levels above the Jiaowei Tiger in strength.

Lin Feng roughly estimated the price of the four kinds of hides and said, ”The skins of the Double-headed Blood Wolf and Shadow Leopard are eight gold coins each, the Jiaowei Tiger skin is ten gold coins, and the Evil Snake skin is forty gold coins.”

”Young brother, make it a bit cheaper, it’s not the peak season for hides, and your prices are too high.”

The middle-aged man continued, clearly interested but still trying to haggle.

Lin Feng replied, ”The price is already very fair!”

The middle-aged man saw Lin Feng’s unwillingness to lower the price and nodded, saying, ”Alright, then wrap up the hides for me.”

Lin Feng squatted down, preparing to wrap up the hides to finalize the transaction with the middle-aged man.

Suddenly.

A group of a dozen people squeezed in from the outside.

”Hold on...,” the leader coldly snapped.

”So it’s Lord Li!” The middle-aged man saw the leading figure and hurriedly greeted him.

The newcomers wore mercenary clothing, indicating they were likely mercenaries. The onlookers around displayed expressions of reverence, suggesting the mercenaries held high status.

But upon reflection, it seemed quite normal.

This world is different from the Heavenly Martial Continent.

The Heavenly Martial Continent is a world of cultivators, where being a mercenary is a relatively low profession, usually a job for Loose Cultivators who band together to form mercenary groups.

If someone had great strength and background, who would choose the risky life of a mercenary, adding blood and steel to their daily life?

Moreover, those with talent don’t need to become mercenaries, as various great forces would gladly take them in.

But in this world, it’s evidently different.

In this world, Heaven and Earth Rules suppress mana and Divine Sense, making cultivators extremely rare.

Thus, powerful martial artists become lofty, overseeing existences.

Mercenary groups are usually composed of martial artists.

They roam the dangerous forests, hunting powerful fierce beasts, and looking for precious Spiritual Medicine, minerals, and other valuables.

Therefore, mercenary groups symbolize strength, wealth, and status.

Offending a mercenary group is not advisable for ordinary people.

”Fatty Liu, these four beast skins have caught my eye,” said the leading mercenary, named Li Gang, casually glancing at the fat middle-aged man.

The middle-aged man, named Liu Qing, was the owner of the largest tailoring shop in town.

Fatty Liu naturally didn’t dare offend these mercenaries and nodded, saying, ”Since Lord Li has taken a liking to them, these hides naturally belong to Lord Li!”

”Good, it seems you, Fatty Liu, know how to conduct business properly,” Li Gang lightly smiled, and then instructed, ”Give the gold coins to this kid.”

”Yes, sir...,” immediately, a mercenary stepped forward, handing Lin Feng a pouch.

Lin Feng opened the pouch and counted, finding only twenty gold coins. He voiced, ”These four skins are worth sixty-six gold coins, not twenty. You must have misunderstood the amount!”

Upon hearing Lin Feng’s words, Li Gang’s face darkened sharply as he coldly inquired, ”Kid, do you not know the rules of marketplace transactions?”

Fatty Liu hurriedly whispered to Lin Feng, ”Young brother, these mercenaries are not people we can afford to offend. What they take a liking to, they determine the price. If they’ve given you twenty gold coins, that means your hides are only worth twenty gold coins. Do not get into conflict with them, or else you risk not just losing the gold coins but even your life.”

At this moment, Li Gang’s icy gaze swept over Lin Feng, asking word by word, ”Fatty Liu should have told you some rules. I ask you now, are these four beast skins worth only twenty gold coins, yes or no?”
