Vampire Progenitor System

Desolate space stretched in every direction, a graveyard of failed stars and shattered planetoids drifting without purpose. Cold dust hung in clouds so thick they swallowed light. Korrath and Selene stood on the cracked surface of a dead moon, their presence the only living thing for light-years. Void-forged armor and liquid starlight looked almost out of place against the absolute emptiness.

Selene’s black eyes swept the void once, twice, then a third time with clinical precision. ”She is not here.”

Korrath’s white fire flared in the cracks of his armor. The temperature around them dropped until residual ice on the moon’s surface began to crack and scream. ”Not here,” he repeated, voice rising like grinding continents. ”We tore three layers of her false seals. We followed every residual signature she left like breadcrumbs. We crossed dead systems and collapsed timelines. And for what? Another empty rock.”

He slammed a fist into the moon’s surface. The impact sent a shockwave that shattered the nearest planetoid into glittering debris. Galaxies swirled violently inside the gaps of his armor as his anger fed them. ”She has been toying with us. Every trail, every faint echo of her power—it was deliberate. She wanted us running in circles, wasting time while she finished whatever she is doing with that hybrid seed. I can feel the mockery in every dead end. She is laughing at us, Selene. Laughing while we chase ghosts she planted centuries ago.”

Selene remained still, but the starlight that formed her body flickered with restrained irritation. ”Her seals were never meant to hold forever. They were meant to delay. To frustrate. To make the hunters doubt their own senses. She always preferred psychological warfare over direct confrontation.”

Korrath’s white fire burned hotter. ”I do not care what she prefers. I am done being led by the nose through this sealed garbage heap she calls a universe. Every step has been a calculated insult. She knew the Loom would send us. She prepared the board so that we would waste our strength and our patience before we ever laid eyes on her. And I am finished playing her game.”

He paced across the dead moon, each step leaving glowing footprints that burned through the rock. ”We have been misled. Deliberately. Methodically. She has turned the entire hunt into a farce. I can still hear the residual laughter in the residual power she left behind. It is the same arrogance that made her plant wild seeds in the first place. The same arrogance that nearly tore the Loom apart the last time.”

Selene watched him without interrupting. She had seen Korrath angry before, but rarely this personal. Aeloria’s mind games had always been effective against the more rigid members of the Loom. Against Korrath, they were salt in an open wound.

Then the anger shifted.

Korrath stopped pacing. The white fire in his armor settled into a lower, steadier burn. A slow grin spread across the jagged lines of his face. The sound that followed was not a chuckle. It was a full, deep, rolling laugh that made the dead moon vibrate.

Selene tilted her head. ”What is going on in that armored skull of yours?”

Korrath turned to her, eyes still burning with cold white light. ”What if we simply destroy the universe? From what I can sense, there are multiple realms layered inside this sealed space. Vampire. Demon. Human. Whatever else she allowed to grow. We can take them one after the other. Burn them. Unmake them. Force her to come out. She cannot stand and watch her precious garden die while she hides.”

Selene’s expression did not change, but the voids of her eyes deepened. She sighed, a sound like dying stars collapsing into silence. ”I wish it were that simple. You still do not understand her. Aeloria does not give a damn about her creations. Not the realms. Not the lesser Progenitors. Not the mortals crawling across the surfaces of her experiments. She has always been willing to let entire universes burn if the fire produced something interesting.”

She stepped closer, starlight body casting no real shadow. ”Her true nature is not creation for the sake of life. It is creation for the sake of the experiment. She plants seeds the way a child plants knives in soft earth—curious to see which ones will grow sharp enough to cut the gardener. The rest can wither. The rest can scream. She will watch without blinking. That is why she is dangerous. She does not hate her failures. She is simply indifferent to them. Indifference is colder than hatred and far more reliable.”

Korrath’s grin faded slightly, but the hunger in his eyes remained. Selene continued, voice quiet and precise.

”She is capable of spinning pocket realities that last for eons just to test a single variable. She can unmake a Progenitor mid-ascension and harvest the residue for the next attempt. She once let an entire layer of the Loom collapse because the resulting chaos produced a more elegant equation. Empathy is not in her design. Mercy is not in her vocabulary. The only thing she has ever truly valued is the possibility of a seed that surpasses her. That hybrid she is guiding now—the one she calls her success—is the only variable she will protect. Everything else is fuel. Everything else is acceptable loss.”

She gestured at the desolate void around them. ”You could burn every realm in this universe to ash and she would only watch with mild interest, calculating what the destruction might teach her about the hybrid’s reaction. She would not come out to save them. She would come out only if the hybrid himself was threatened beyond recovery. That is the true measure of her apathy. That is why she nearly destroyed the Loom the last time. She does not fight for ideals. She fights for the experiment. And right now, the experiment is more important to her than any of us.”

Korrath stared at the empty space for a long moment. The white fire in his armor settled into a cold, steady burn. ”Then we stop chasing her trails. We find the hybrid. We threaten the only thing she actually cares about.”

Selene’s black eyes gleamed with quiet agreement. ”Now you understand.”

Far across the sealed universe, in a realm of starfire and crystallized memory, Aeloria felt the shift in the hunt and smiled.
