Re-Awakening: I Ascend with a Legendary class

Chapter 803: What Was Watching

Day two started quietly, which nobody trusted.

The gates kept venting, but the volume dropped. No coordinated pushes. No surprises. For six straight hours the Gutwrack Span fought the same steady grind it had started with, and every single person holding a position felt the wrongness of it.

”They’ve stopped adapting,” Maya said at the thirtieth hour. ”Since the eighth gate collapsed, nothing’s adjusted to anything we’ve done.”

”Maybe we hurt it,” Noah said.

”Maybe it’s busy,” Marcus said.

Rudra looked up at that. ”Busy with what?”

Marcus didn’t have an answer. That was the part that bothered him.

The answer arrived at the thirty-fourth hour, and it came from Veruhn.

The Ashfall Basin captain reached the Gutwrack Span on foot, alone, having crossed forty miles of contested ground to deliver something he clearly didn’t trust to any link.

Jian met him at the perimeter and brought him straight to the center.

”Your kingdom pulled two hundred and fourteen of my people out,” the captain said, before anyone could ask. ”So I’m going to tell you something the Six haven’t posted yet.”

”Go on,” Almond said.

”Sector 9 didn’t fall.” The captain’s face was grey with more than ash. ”Nobody answered the task. Eleven kingdoms declined it, yours included. And then it stopped being a sector and started being something else.”

”Meaning what?”

”Meaning the breaches in Sector 9 stopped venting monsters two hours ago,” the captain said. ”All five of them. They’re still open. Nothing’s coming through.”

Marcus went very still.

”They’re not gates anymore,” he said slowly. ”They’re doors. Something’s using them to move.”

”That’s what I came to tell you,” the captain said. ”Sector 9 borders you. Whatever’s on the other side has had six hours to walk wherever it wanted.”

Almond did not defend the decision, and nobody asked him to.

He simply stood there for a moment with the weight of it, the way he’d said he would when he made the call, and then he moved past it because standing in it helped nobody.

”Marcus. Full sweep. Everything Maya can reach.”

”Already running.”

”Rudra, assume we’re about to be hit from a direction we haven’t fortified.”

”Assumed,” Rudra said. ”I’ve been assuming it for an hour.”

Maya’s Farsight Loom stretched further than she’d pushed it all event, out past the sector’s edge, into the broken country between the Gutwrack Span and Sector 9.

She found it at the thirty-fifth hour, and her voice came through the link flat and careful in a way that frightened people more than panic would have.

”There’s something moving toward us,” she said. ”One thing. It’s walking.”

”How big?”

”That’s the problem,” Maya said. ”It’s person-sized.”

It came over the eastern ridge alone, and it looked almost human.

Tall, thin, wrapped in something that hung like cloth but moved like it was being worn by wind rather than a body. Where a face should have been there was a smooth grey plate, featureless except for a single seam running down its center.

It carried nothing. It hurried nowhere. It walked across the Gutwrack Span at a steady, unbothered pace, and every gate in the sector went quiet as it passed.

”That’s the thing that’s been coordinating them,” Almond said, and his reading confirmed it a half second later. Not a monster. Not a creature at all in the way the gates had been sending. A will, wearing enough shape to walk. ”It’s been directing the gates because it’s what they were opening for. The monsters were just what came through first.”

”Can you read a weakness?”

Almond tried.

”No,” he said.

That single syllable did more to sober the sector than anything else had in thirty-five hours.

It spoke when it reached the sector’s center, and the voice came from the seam.

”Eleven refused.”

Nobody answered it.

”Eleven kingdoms were asked, and eleven declined, and the ones who would have been saved were not saved.” The seam widened slightly, which might have been the closest thing it had to an expression. ”I did not open Sector 9 to kill them. I opened it to ask a question, and you all answered it honestly. Thank you.”

”What question,” Lily said flatly.

”Whether you would spend yourselves on strangers when the cost was real.” The thing’s head tilted. ”Three kingdoms did, earlier, at smaller cost. They died. Eleven refused at greater cost. They lived. The answer is consistent across every world I have opened.”

”You killed those responders to run a test,” Natalia said.

”I killed nothing. Your event killed them. I only watched which of you walked into it.”

Rudra moved first, because Rudra had spent his life recognizing the exact moment talking stopped being useful.

Tollbound Reckoning had been building since the thing crossed the ridge, marking every step it took as debt, and he called it in all at once with no warning.

The collected weight of thirty-five hours of patience landed on the grey figure and did absolutely nothing.

It did not stagger. It did not brace. The debt arrived and simply failed to find anything to land on.

”It’s not carrying force,” Almond said, reading fast now. ”It’s not here enough to owe anything.”

”Then let’s make it here,” Ainen said.

Saltbound Covenant reached for it, an offering forced into a hand that wasn’t a hand, and for one instant the covenant almost caught. The figure paused mid-step, genuinely paused, and something in the seam flickered.

Then it declined.

Not resisted. Declined, the way a person declines a plate, and the covenant unwound without ever binding.

”That’s new,” Ainen said, and he did not sound amused.

It was Lily who found the crack.

Oathbreak Wraith didn’t care what something was made of. It only cared whether a thing knew who it was, and she asked the question the way she’d asked it of a hundred false reflections in a mirror maze.

The grey figure answered.

It answered with a name, ancient and enormous and far too large for the space it occupied, and the sheer weight of it nearly knocked Lily off her feet.

But it answered. Which meant it had one.

”It’s real,” she said, breathless. ”It’s a person. Whatever else it is, it’s got a self, and I can reach a self.”

”Can you cut it?”

”Not alone.” Lily was already bleeding from the nose. ”It’s bigger than anything I’ve ever severed. But I can hold onto it.”

”Then hold,” Almond said, and drew.

What followed was eleven seconds long and cost more than anything else in the event so far.

Lily held the name. That was all she did, both hands locked around something that fought her the entire time, every second of it costing her more than the last. It was not like holding a rope. It was like holding a door shut against a weight that had never once in its existence been told no.

Her knees went at second three. She stayed up anyway.

”Move,” she said. ”I can’t do this long.”

Almond went in with Keyward Absence, and instead of attacking the figure, he attacked its arrival. The same trick that had trapped a monster halfway through a gate now refused to let something that was barely present finish becoming present at all.

The grey figure flickered. For the first time since it had crossed the ridge, it stopped walking.

That was the moment the rest of them had been waiting for.

Rudra’s second reckoning landed on a thing that was suddenly, finally, here enough to owe something, and this time thirty-five hours of debt found somewhere to land. The figure’s smooth grey plate cracked along its seam.

Ainen’s covenant caught on the second attempt, binding a guest who could no longer decline, and whatever that binding cost the thing, it cost it visibly.

Natalia’s Brand marked it. Noah’s blade found the crack Rudra had opened. Jian’s lightning went in after it, and Kira’s ice held the widening seam open so it could not close. Julian and Emma burned it from two directions at once while Maya called out every shift before it happened and Marcus fed corrections to all of them in real time.

Grimreaver Sovereign went in last, and found a center that Lily’s grip had dragged into reach.

The figure came apart.

It did not die the way anything else had died in this event. There was no collapse, no scream, no body. It simply stopped being able to hold the shape it had been wearing, and the shape fell empty to the ground like a coat sliding off a hook, and the thing inside it went somewhere none of them could follow.

Lily dropped. Julian caught her.

The gates stayed open.

That was the first thing Marcus checked, and the answer was bad in a way nobody had time to properly process.

”It’s gone and they’re still venting,” he said. ”Whatever it was, it wasn’t holding the gates open. It was just using them.”

”So it can come back,” Kira said.

”It can come back,” Almond agreed.

Lily was conscious, barely, propped against a rock with Kayla’s green light already working. Her nose had stopped bleeding. Her hands hadn’t stopped shaking.

”I heard its name,” she said.

”Don’t,” Almond said immediately.

”I’m not going to say it.” Lily’s eyes were fixed on nothing. ”I just want someone to know I heard it. It’s old. Older than this layer. It’s been doing this for a very long time, and it wasn’t lying about the test.”

Big D’s voice came through the link, rough and steady.

”Then we failed a test set by something that murders people to run it,” he said. ”I’ll lose exactly no sleep over that. Everyone back to positions.”

Nobody argued.

Above the Gutwrack Span, the sky had gone from black back to sick orange, and four and a half days still remained.
