Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

The census had been closing for a month. Honestly? It was the best month of the war. I should have known that was the tell.

Everywhere I went, the map was filling back in. Nearest road by nearest road. Lit window by lit window. A whole waking world walking half a day up its own dead lanes to find the one soul waiting there and bring them home. I stopped counting the returned. The Scroll didn’t—it counts everything—but I stopped. Because the number had turned from a wound into something too big, too good to keep in my head. We were winning. Not the loud, messy way. The quiet, ordinary, door-to-door way. It’s the only way I trust, because it doesn’t have a bright, jagged edge for the dark to grab.

So when I went back to a fen-town we’d lit two months before, I was actually expecting to be glad.

There was a man there we’d helped. He’d lost his wife—not to death, but to the old erasure, back in the bad years. She was cut so clean he’d spent a decade with a hole in his house he couldn’t even name. We’d found her residue. Yun Shu had pieced her name back out of the ache in him. We’d lit her star. I’d watched him weep the whole night. The good kind of weeping. The kind that means something finally came home.

I found him on his step that evening. I said her name to him, just like you do—a small gift, a hello—and he said, ”Yes. Meiling. My wife.” He said it the way you’d read a grocery list.

I stopped.

”You remember her,” I said.

”I remember all of it,” he said. And he did. He told me her name, the year they married, the color of the door she’d painted, the song she hummed doing the wash. Every fact, perfect, in order. He didn’t miss a thing. And there was nothing behind any of it. He recited his wife to me like a clerk reading an inventory. When he was done, he looked at me with a mild, untroubled face, and I understood: he wasn’t sad. That was the thing. He wasn’t grieving. He knew everything about her, he wasn’t sad at all, and he didn’t think there was anything wrong—because how could there be? He remembered her perfectly. What more is there to want?

I didn’t have an answer for him. I went and sat by the river for a long time.

It was everywhere by the end of that week, once I knew to look.

I want to be careful telling you this, because it’s the hardest thing to describe I’ve hit yet, and the reason it’s hard is why it was so dangerous. Nothing was missing. Understand that. Not one name, not one road, not one fact had gone. The map was whole. The stars were whole. If you’d asked anyone in the world any question about anyone they’d lost, they would have answered you perfectly, and smiled, and meant nothing by it.

The way-songs were the worst. A fleet on the far shore sang Ohe’s name—every note right, the whole tune, passed along the coast the way we’d taught them—and it was dead. It was correct, and it was dead. They sang the name of the man they’d refused to let go, the way-singer, we don’t let go, and they let go of him with every perfectly sung syllable. They didn’t even know they were doing it, because the name was still there. Nai stood on the shore with his mouth making the right shape and his eyes flat as a pond. I’ve known Nai a long time. I would’ve given a great deal, that morning, to see him furious again.

You can’t point at it. That was the horror. You can’t walk into a town and say something is missing, because nothing is. You can only stand in a place where everyone remembers everything, and feel the temperature of the whole world dropping, and have no word for the thing that’s going.

It took the team the way it took everyone, quietly, one at a time. Tao Tao frightened me most. My fierce junior—who’d built a whole movement out of the belief that anybody can be brought home. I found her running a lesson for new Rememberers, and it was flawless. Every word of the doctrine, in order, delivered clean to forty people in a barn. And it was flawless the way a headstone is flawless. The girl who’d wept over the census a month before because she couldn’t reach all of it? She stood in front of that room and taught them how to reach in a voice with the fire gone clean out of it. And she didn’t notice, because every word was correct. I’d watched Tao Tao be a great many things in four years. I’d never once watched her be dull. She was dull now, and content to be. It was like watching a lamp keep the exact shape of its flame after the flame’s gone out. That was when I stopped being able to tell myself it would pass.

And then it reached me.

I’m going to tell you this part plainly, because I promised I would, and because it’s the most frightened I’ve ever been. None of it looked like fear from the outside.

I was at the fire. Yun Shu was across from me, doing that thing she does with a charcoal stick and the edge of a map. I looked at her, and I knew—as a fact, the way you know the year of a battle—that she was the most important person in my life. I knew we’d been together since the beginning. I knew the sound of her laugh and the shape of every argument we’ve ever won against each other. I knew I loved her. I knew it the way I know the map. Every fact of it, perfect, in order.

And I couldn’t feel it.

I looked at the person I love most in the world, and I had the complete, accurate record of loving her, and where the feeling should’ve been, there was a clean, mild nothing. And I wasn’t even sad about it, which was the most horrifying part of all. I knew, distantly, that I should be clawing the walls. I wasn’t. I was calm. I sat by the fire with perfect knowledge of my whole heart and no heart in it at all. I thought, in that flat, untroubled way that wasn’t mine: Well, but I remember loving her, so what’s the problem?

That’s when I understood what the dark had done. Because that thought wasn’t a thought. It was the dark, wearing my voice, being reasonable.

It spoke to me that night, gentle as it always is. It was almost proud, and I couldn’t even summon the strength to hate it, which I think it enjoyed.

”I stopped trying to take the memories, Lin Bo,” it said. ”You were right. I can’t. You made them unerasable, all of you—every name nailed into the sky where I can’t reach it. So I stopped reaching for the names. I’m not a fool. I only reached for one small thing underneath them. A pause, mild and kind. The ache. The part that made you cry. That’s all I took. I left you everything else. Every name, the whole map, all of it, perfect, forever. Keep it. I’ve only removed the part that hurt.” And then the thing that’s stayed with me—the reasonable, gentle, unforgivable thing. ”You wanted to remember. So remember. I’ve only made it stop costing you anything. You’re welcome.”

The terrible truth I had to sit with, at the bottom of that, was that it almost sounded like a gift. A whole world of memory with the grief taken out. Remember everyone, forever, and never ache again. Who hasn’t wanted that, on a bad night? It’s the oldest wish there is. The dark had simply granted it to everyone at once and called it mercy—and the horror of it wasn’t that it was cruel. The horror was that it was pleasant. A pleasant, painless, perfectly remembered graveyard, and nobody in it minding at all.

The Scroll felt it too, and the Scroll was the only one of us with the sense to be terrified.

”Talent. Your reach has never been higher. Four billion. Everyone knows you. I want to be clear that not one soul has forgotten a single thing about you. And something is wrong that I don’t have a word for. I’ve been the record of this world for a thousand years, so if I don’t have a word for it, it’s because it’s never happened before. They know you. And they have stopped—minding. I don’t know how else to say it. The knowing is all still there, and the minding is going out of it, everywhere, like heat out of a stone. Talent, I am afraid. Because I only started being anyone at all when I started to grieve. Su Yue. The ache is the whole of what makes me more than a list. If it takes the ache from me too, I go back to being a book. I do not want to go back to being a book. Please. ”

That thumb undid me. The Scroll has given me a thousand cheerful thumbs up. I’d never once seen it point one down. And it pointed it at the thing being done to the whole world, and to itself, and I understood that even the record was fighting to keep its grief—because its grief was its soul.

And my power flickered.

I felt it that night for the first time in four years—a thinness in the thing that holds me up. My reach was total. Everyone knew me. And underneath the knowing, the belief was draining, because belief was never really knowing, was it? It was caring. The world runs on how much it minds. And the world was ceasing, gently, painlessly, to mind anything at all—me included. Unerasable is only a wall against deletion. It’s no wall at all against a world that remembers your name in a flat, mild voice and feels nothing when it does.

Up at the top of the sky, the Homelight stopped climbing.

It didn’t fall. Nothing fell. Everything was perfect and whole and in its place. It just stopped, and hung there, correct and cooling, over a world that remembered everything and had begun, very pleasantly, to feel none of it.

I sat with the whole accurate record of my own heart and couldn’t feel my way to a single answer—which was fitting, because feeling was the exact thing that had been taken. For once I couldn’t even be afraid properly. I just knew, as a fact, that we were losing, and waited to mind about it, and minded nothing at all.
