Chapter 739: Two Sides of the Same Hope

The great doors of the assembly hall opened slowly.

The sound of the hinges echoed through the enormous chamber, drawing the attention of everyone inside.

Every conversation stopped.

Every whisper disappeared.

Hundreds of eyes turned toward the entrance.

For months, the humans had argued about the Devil King’s successor.

Some had called her a threat.

Others had called her an opportunity.

Some believed she was simply a political tool.

And some had wondered whether she even existed as the stories described.

Now they finally had their answer.

Lilith stepped through the doorway.

The first thing the people inside noticed was not her aura.

It was her appearance.

She looked...

Human.

There were no monstrous features.

No terrifying horns towering above her head.

No monstrous claws.

No appearance that immediately separated her from the people sitting inside the hall.

She looked like a young woman who could have walked into the capital at any other time and disappeared into the crowd.

Her eyes carried the only obvious difference.

There was something unusual about them.

Something that reminded the people watching her that the person standing before them belonged to a different race.

But even that difference felt strangely familiar.

Several representatives stared at her for longer than they intended.

One elderly noble leaned toward the person beside him.

”Have we met her before?”

The other man shook his head.

”No.”

”Then why does she look so familiar?”

Neither had an answer.

It was a strange sensation.

The Devil King’s successor was supposed to be someone distant, someone frightening, someone who belonged to a world humanity had spent generations fighting.

Yet there was nothing alien about the way she carried herself.

She looked nervous.

She looked tired.

She looked young.

And somehow, that made the entire situation even more uncomfortable.

A few representatives exchanged glances.

One whispered,

”She looks like any other human.”

Another answered quietly,

”That’s the problem.”

Lilith heard them.

She pretended she hadn’t.

Her eyes moved across the enormous chamber.

The assembly hall was even larger than she had imagined.

At the far end stood the elevated seats of the War Council.

On one side sat representatives of the Authority.

On the other sat the Church.

Around them were guild masters, veteran warriors, scholars, nobles, and invited observers.

Every faction that had spent months arguing about her presence was now sitting in front of her.

And then she saw her seat.

Lilith stopped.

For a brief moment, she thought there had been a mistake.

Her chair stood alone on one side of the chamber.

Across from it were rows upon rows of human representatives.

The arrangement was impossible to misunderstand.

One side.

One person.

An entire room of humans on the other.

It looked less like a negotiation and more like an interrogation.

Lilith slowly looked toward Mia.

Mia noticed the expression on her face.

”I know,” she whispered.

Lilith gave a small smile.

”I suppose I shouldn’t have expected a welcome feast.”

Mia’s expression softened.

”It wasn’t my decision.”

”I know.”

Lilith took another breath.

Then she walked toward her seat.

Every step echoed through the chamber.

The sound seemed louder than it should have been.

Tap.

With every step, Lilith could feel the weight of hundreds of eyes following her.

Some were curious.

Some were suspicious.

Some were openly hostile.

Others seemed almost disappointed.

Perhaps they had expected something more terrifying.

Perhaps they had expected the daughter of a Devil King to look like the monster they had spent their entire lives imagining.

Instead, she looked like someone who could have been their neighbor.

A young woman reached the seat and slowly sat down.

The chamber remained silent.

Then Commander Rurik stood.

”Queen Lilith.”

Lilith looked toward him.

”Welcome to the Human Domain.”

There was no hostility in his voice.

But there was caution.

Lilith nodded.

”Thank you for allowing me to speak.”

Rurik returned to his seat.

The silence returned.

Lilith looked across the room.

She had imagined this moment many times.

She had imagined angry humans.

She had imagined accusations.

She had even imagined someone demanding that she leave.

But seeing all those people sitting across from her made the reality far heavier than imagination.

These were the people whose families had lost loved ones.

The people whose homes had been destroyed.

The people who had fought against Aamon’s forces.

And she was the daughter of the king whose kingdom had once stood against them.

Even though she had never ordered those battles, she understood why they might hate her.

She lowered her gaze briefly.

Then raised it again.

”I know why you are afraid of me.”

A few representatives shifted in their seats.

”I also know why some of you don’t trust me.”

She paused.

”I don’t expect you to.”

Several people looked surprised.

Lilith continued.

”I didn’t come here expecting centuries of hatred to disappear because I asked for peace.”

Her voice remained calm.

”I came because I believe we have already lost enough.”

A murmur passed through the chamber.

One representative shook his head.

Another folded his arms.

The Church representatives remained completely still.

Lilith looked at them.

”My father believed humans and devils could live together.”

The chamber became quieter.

”He believed our differences did not have to become reasons for war.”

Her fingers tightened slightly against the armrest.

”He died before he could prove whether he was right.”

Lilith took a slow breath.

”I don’t know if I can prove it either.”

She looked across the room.

”But I want to try.”

For several seconds, no one answered.

Then—

Far away from the human capital...

The Devil Kingdom was experiencing a very different kind of silence.

News had arrived.

Lilith’s journey to the Human Domain had not remained secret.

Messengers had returned from the borders.

Reports had traveled through military camps.

Merchants had carried rumors between cities.

And eventually, the truth had reached the ears of those who had misunderstood her intentions.

Lilith truly wanted peace.

She wasn’t pretending.

She wasn’t attempting to manipulate the humans.

She wasn’t secretly preparing some elaborate strategy.

She genuinely wanted an alliance.

The reaction was immediate.

Inside one of the council chambers, several high-ranking devils sat in silence.

One of them slammed his fist against the table.

”So it was true.”

Another devil lowered his head.

”The Queen intends to honor the treaty.”

”We thought she was using the humans.”

”We were wrong.”

The first devil stared toward the window.

For weeks, some of them had convinced themselves that Lilith’s actions were part of a brilliant strategy.

They had believed she was allowing the humans to weaken themselves through political division.

They had praised her supposed foresight.

They had told themselves that their young queen was more cunning than Aamon.

But now they understood.

She had never intended such a thing.

She actually wanted peace.

One elderly devil slowly stood.

”Then we have misunderstood our queen.”

Nobody answered.

The old devil continued.

”We believed she was leading humanity toward chaos.”

He shook his head.

”Instead, she intends to end it.”

A younger devil frowned.

”Then what happens to us?”

”What do you mean?”

”If peace comes...”

He hesitated.

”...what happens to everything we fought for?”

That question changed the atmosphere.

Another devil leaned forward.

”Our people have spent generations fighting humans.”

”Yes.”

”Our soldiers died.”

”Yes.”

”Our families were destroyed.”

”Yes.”

”And now we are expected to simply shake their hands?”

No one answered.

The room slowly divided.

Some devils lowered their heads, thinking about the possibility of peace.

Others clenched their fists.

One of the military representatives finally spoke.

”I will not accept it.”

The room became still.

He looked around at the others.

”The Queen may want peace.”

”But that does not mean we have to.”

Several others looked toward him.

He continued.

”Do you truly believe humans will suddenly forget everything?”

”They won’t.”

”They will eventually turn against us again.”

”They always do.”

His voice grew colder.

”If Lilith wants to trust them, that is her decision.”

”But I refuse to allow her decision to erase everything we suffered.”

A few devils quietly nodded.

The first cracks began to appear.

Not in Lilith’s kingdom.

Not yet.

But among those who had once supported Aamon.

Those who had lost brothers.

Friends.

Homes.

Positions.

Power.

They had accepted Lilith because they believed she was bringing the kingdom toward a different kind of victory.

Now they discovered that she genuinely wanted peace.

And that realization created a problem.

They could not openly oppose their queen.

Not after the coronation.

Not after the people had begun placing their hopes in her.

So they began whispering instead.

Quietly.

Carefully.

”If the treaty is signed, our influence disappears.”

”Then don’t let it be signed.”

”How?”

”We will find a way.”

”What if the Queen discovers us?”

The devil smiled faintly.

”Then we make sure she never knows.”

Their conversation ended there.

But the intention remained.

The peace treaty had created two different reactions within the Devil Kingdom.

Some celebrated.

Some prayed.

Some looked forward to trade with humans.

Some dreamed of children growing up without war.

And others quietly sharpened their hatred.

*****************************************************

Back inside the human assembly hall, Lilith remained seated alone.

The human representatives continued watching her.

For the first time, however, the atmosphere had begun to change.

She was no longer merely the Devil King’s daughter.

She was a person sitting before them.

A person who had willingly entered a room filled with people who could have hated her.

A person who had admitted that she did not expect them to trust her.

Across the chamber, Mia watched quietly.

Zero stood behind the designated guard formation, his expression unreadable.

He had been watching the room from the moment Lilith entered.

He noticed the same thing she did.

This meeting was not going to be easy.

But at least now, the humans were finally hearing the truth from the person who mattered.

And far away, in the Devil Kingdom, another truth had become clear.

Lilith’s greatest challenge would not necessarily come from humanity.

It might come from her own people.

Between two kingdoms stood one fragile idea.

Peace.

And both sides had already begun preparing for what would happen if it failed.
