Ember Legion

Before dawn, Chen Jin was already at the machine shop up north. The door panel still lay by the entrance as a workbench, and the one chalked word on it — RIVET — was still there. Xiao Mao had written it the day the shop first opened, when no one in the city believed a half-grown child could put an old machine back together; she wrote it on the door so anyone passing would see it, better than words.

She had gone over it twice with a stolen chalk stub to make it hold, and the corners still carried the color of that year’s machine oil. Now the panel was to be replaced by a proper nameplate, but the word stayed — where a thing came from hung at the door, and the new name could not cover the old.

Inside, the lamp had never gone out. Xiao Mao was there, the furnace still warm, the third cannon’s barrel resting on a sawhorse while she worked it with sandpaper stroke by stroke until the weld shone. Chen Jin stood in the doorway and watched a moment, not going in to disturb her — the sound of something growing in this room was not to be found outside.

By the furnace, the offcuts from last night’s welding were stacked in a neat pile; she had squared them away, square and tidy — she had a rule about her work: nothing moved until everything was lined up.

Da Liu stood at the door, one-handed. Same stance as before, outside the threshold, the work chit in his breast gone softer at the edges from being held all day. Chen Jin watched him a while, then walked over without a word and drew him one step inside.

”Come in and sit.”

Da Liu did not move, unused to being invited in. ”Sit inside… then I’m Da Liu of the battalion now?”

”The battalion’s been stood up a day,” Chen Jin said. ”You’ve stood at that threshold a day. You should have come in sooner.”

Da Liu stepped in then and crouched against the wall inside — not sat, crouched, the way he was used to, crouching steadier than sitting, one hand braced on his knee, back straight.

Chen Jin did not press him. Some flags are raised to be seen, not hung on a wall, but a flag needs a root, and the root was in this room now, better than at the door. He did not say it aloud; he only let the words come in and sit settle in his mind. The fifteenth time he reckoned with a regret, lighter than the fourteenth — light as the shape of a man finally crouching behind that door panel. The fourteenth time he had regretted standing the battalion up three days late; this time there was less to regret, and what was less was a Da Liu-shaped shadow finally inside the door.

Da Liu crouched there, one hand on his knee, eyes on the barrel across the room — the stock he had helped haul back from the rail port, piece by piece, carried in on his shoulder.

Now the stock was a cannon, and he crouched at its side, his name square, his place steady, but the hand was still the one. Chen Jin did not count Da Liu’s wounds for him; Da Liu had counted them to himself countless times, and stopped counting that night.

At noon, the nameplate.

Zhou Zhengting spread the drafted order on the old customs house table, and his pencil tip paused on the character for workshop, the same pause he had given the character for battalion the day before — one hesitation going from labor to soldier, another going from soldier to workshop, two thresholds, two pauses. The order was short, three lines: the old garrison machine shop north of the city was hereby renamed the Arsenal, under the city defense commander; Xiao Mao, workshop master, to head ordnance, armor, and codebreaking; all tools, stock lists, and hands of the former shop to be transferred to the workshop rolls.

Chen Jin read it and added a line: ”Da Liu enters the workshop, gate-keeper and hand.” Zhou Zhengting looked up, asked nothing, and added it — he had already written that line on the back of his draft, waiting only for Chen Jin to say it.

When the order was read, a few laborers peeked in from the door. At the words workshop master, Xiao Mao, someone went ”hah” and got an elbow in the ribs from the man behind.

Xiao Mao was not there; she was up north at her cannon, and the business of the nameplate was heard for her by others.

The nameplate was found by Old Lu — camphor wood, a foot and a half long, the characters by the clerk, two coats of tung oil, half a day to dry. Chen Jin hung it himself, nails driven into the doorframe, the face out, bright in the sun. Beneath the three characters of the Arsenal, the chalked RIVET was left unerased, half showing under the lacquered edge of the new board — the old name bedding the new.

When it was hung, Chen Jin stepped back to look, and Old Lu muttered beside him, ”That makes it official.” Official or not, the RIVET on the door panel knew best — it had arrived before anyone, and would outlast them all.

Xiao Mao looked up from the barrel, furnace soot still on her face, sleeves rolled to the elbow, an old scar at her wrist from a welding spark. She said no thanks, said nothing else, only hitched the wrench tighter at her belt and turned back to her cannon. Chen Jin could see it was not that she was unhappy — she was happy and did not know what to do with her face. Sixteen, with the character for workshop hung over her name for the first time; lighter than battalion commander, heavier than soldier, landing exactly on the ground she had always stood on.

The RIVET on the door panel she had written herself; the three characters of the Arsenal others had hung for her. Together, the two were her name.

When she turned, the furnace threw her shadow on the wall, and in the shadow the old reloading press stirred too — the machine coughed once, took half a day to catch its breath, the same ailment, ten years unhealed, ten years unstopped.

The third cannon grew in this room.

Its barrel was two lengths of thick web-rail butt-welded, a thing Xiao Mao had been growing since the first weld, still a furnace-fire short the day before. This morning she opened the last seam, the furnace fire banked tight, hammer stroke by stroke, sparks falling at her feet and hissing out in the mud.

Chen Jin had counted the welds — seven; the first six had passed the water test, no seep; the seventh opened today, and after welding it had to be let settle. Xiao Mao would not let him touch it; the fire had a temper, she said, and whether it had settled you could not feel with a hand — you listened. He crouched beside her a while and asked, ”How much left?”

”One fire.” She did not look up. ”Not more stock. Waiting for it to settle on its own — iron grows in this city, the cannon grows, and one hammer too many at the right moment is a wound.”

He did not hurry her. The fifth day since Broken-Tooth died, and for the first time something in the city was growing rather than being spent. He thought of the two cannons finished earlier; with this one, the city had teeth in three places now — north, east, behind the gap.

The one behind the gap was raised after Broken-Tooth died; the men at its post had changed three times, the cannon had not, its muzzle aimed at the shoal, the same bearing as the bug-tide that night.

Bi Chengzhang would investigate treason through grain, medicine, and arms — and now arms had a name, the Arsenal. Chen Jin weighed it: the name was a double edge. Hung, the cannon was the city’s; hung, the cannon was also the committee’s ledger. Six days — enough for Xiao Mao to service all three guns, and enough for Bi Chengzhang to write those three into his inventory.

The hanging of the nameplate drew a visitor. The same young officer from the enforcement squad came again, still not taking the seat of honor, his stool in the corner, the same stance as the day of the battalion. This time he spoke: ”The committee will register the Arsenal’s assets. Cannons, armor, codebreaking — each numbered, into the city’s books.”

Chen Jin did not look up. ”Register, then. The cannon’s up north, the armor’s in the dock, the codebreaking’s on the clerk’s desk — you want numbers, go match them yourself. And note this: the third cannon’s fire was added mouthful by mouthful by Xiao Mao, not dropped from the sky. Match the numbers and you match the men.”

The officer’s brush paused, he said nothing, wrote Arsenal — pending review in the book, and left. Zhou Zhengting had watched all of it from the side without a sound, and now wrote a line in his own book: Assets transferred, committee dispatched for review. His brush paused, and he added half a line: They review things, not men. — the men were long on the labor register, beyond flipping.

At dusk Wen Heng came to the Arsenal, not to treat, but to record. She had measured Da Liu’s stump three times; today she wrote his work rate into the copy: Left elbow amputated below, single-handed labor, sixty magazines a day, grain by the day, matching the head line of the work ledger. When done, she sealed the copy and pressed a row of little crescents into the seam — the same trick as at the granary, and who taught her went unsaid.

”Can this be copied off?” Chen Jin asked. ”It can,” Wen Heng handed it over. ”But what’s copied is ink, not the man. Don’t leave the one-armed off the rolls — from here on the official books record the living, not the numbers.” She put the brush away, pressed the copy to her chest, and glanced at Da Liu. Da Liu crouched at the wall root and happened to see the hand that pressed the crescents — same as at the granary, nail-bed pressed down, a row of little moons, a counterfeit-proof mark no one could fake.

Chen Jin walked out of the Arsenal with the sealed copy under his arm. The night was clear, the first clear one since Broken-Tooth fell, and the stars came down to the sea without a bug-shell between. He thought of Bi Chengzhang’s two empty stools in the corner, the blades that had not fallen — not yet. Six days, and the fleet would decide which ledgers mattered.

At night Chen Jin walked his round to the north. The Arsenal’s lamp still burned; Xiao Mao was testing the third cannon’s trunnion, hammer stroke by stroke. Farther off, the first-finished cannon behind the gap kept its silence, waiting for this brother to catch up. He did not go in, but stood outside the door and listened — the hammer, the cough of the reloading press, the chisel on the wall’s mended brick; this time one more: the dull ring of a barrel taking shape, stroke by stroke, of a different making than the rest.

North one, east one, behind the gap one — teeth in three places now; whether they could bite a bug-tide was another matter, but at least the city was no longer bare. He heard Xiao Mao set the hammer down, the room fall still a breath, the reloading press cough once more, drawing a breath for the new gun. The sea came in layers behind the shoal, unhurried. The fleet in six days.
