Chapter 1022: Chapter 790: Covenant (Part 3)

”It’s just what I want.”

Huai Shi stood up, picked up the documents on the table, and turned to leave amid the astonished gazes of those around him.

As he stood at the door, he glanced back at the figure behind him, not wanting to say goodbye, just a polite farewell: ”I hope we never meet again.”

And just like that, he left without looking back.

Leaving behind a mess.

.

When he stepped out of the elevator again, he saw a familiar figure in the smoking room opposite.

She was also watching Huai Shi, her eyes complicated. After a while, she shook her head and sighed, ”Though not very rational, it suits your style.”

”To be honest, I regret it, but my mind reacted too late.” Huai Shi shrugged, ”He won’t report me, will he?”

”...Isn’t it a bit late to panic now?”

Ai Qing glanced at him and couldn’t help but sigh: ”If someone comes looking for you because of this, just write a resignation letter. Don’t worry, they won’t accept it, at most they’ll give you a warning, and then suspend your position as Xinhai Inspector.”

”Then I’ll be at a big loss!”

”From Fourth-class Martial Officer to Second-Class Military Officer, you should be secretly pleased.” Ai Qing said, ”You’re now the actual head of the Tanbo Inner Circle. You’re likely to get a new job plan. Even without this incident, you wouldn’t have been allowed to hold the position of Xinhai Inspector anymore.”

”Honestly, I haven’t reacted yet.” Huai Shi shrugged, ”I don’t know if I can get used to it.”

”You’ll get used to it eventually.” Ai Qing said.

Huai Shi sat on the chair next to her, patted his pocket, found it empty, and looked up to ask, ”Got any cigarettes?”

”Ladies’ cigarettes.”

”It’s fine.”

Ai Qing raised her hand and handed over the cigarette box, but Huai Shi glanced at his still bloody hand and hesitated. Ai Qing glanced at him, shook her head and said, ”I’ll give you the whole box, it’s just opened, getting a bargain.”

”I thought you’d say take them, I don’t mind...”

Huai Shi sniffed, ”Mint-flavored?”

”I bought them randomly from the vending machine.” Ai Qing said, ”I’ll give you the lighter too, I originally brought it for you.”

The copper lighter wasn’t flashy; its simple style suited Huai Shi’s taste, looking sturdy and durable, surprisingly hard. It even had his name engraved on the base.

”Thanks.” Huai Shi grinned, opening and closing the lighter, like a child playing with a toy.

”When are you leaving?” he couldn’t help but ask.

”In half an hour.” She said, ”I’m catching the train soon.”

Huai Shi paused for a moment, looking up to say, ”I thought we’d have something to drink together...”

Ai Qing laughed, ”Milk tea?”

”You can have something else if you like.”

”Forget it.” Ai Qing shook her head, ”Drinking during the day is a bad idea, I still need to report back when I return.”

”I’ll see you off.”

”No need, it’s just a few steps away.”

Ai Qing slowly stood up, intending to say goodbye, but turning her head she saw Huai Shi coming up behind her, suddenly reaching out to hug her gently.

”Thank you.” Huai Shi softly said goodbye.

After a while, he heard Ai Qing’s laughter, noticing her stiff posture slowly relaxing in his arms.

”It’s okay.” she murmured softly.

When Huai Shi let go, Ai Qing took a step back, as if wanting to say something but ended up simply saying goodbye calmly: ”Take care, Huai Shi.”

Through the smoking room glass, Huai Shi watched her turn and leave, gradually disappearing into the distant crowd.

Without turning back.

Several times, Huai Shi wanted to chase after her, but didn’t know what to say if he caught up.

Ultimately, he silently watched her figure vanish.

In a long silence, he sat in the chair, holding the lighter in his hand, for a long time, quietly finished the cigarette she left, and dusted off his pants.

Saying a silent goodbye to where she left.

Huai Shi stood up and headed towards customs.

Before the checkpoint leading to Current Circumstances, bustling crowds surged, focusing on the giant screen displaying ship and train schedules, a long queue slowly moved forward.

Huai Shi mingled among the passengers, curiously looking around, like a young person visiting Current Circumstances for the first time.

Yet through customs, he could see a dense crowd, amidst them Vice Principal Mr. Isaac, his head down, rushing to review thick reports and budgets.

His expression indifferent, as always.

At the forefront, Ueno held up a sign, grinning with sharp teeth, eagerly looking around, drawing many curious eyes.

But the sign in his hand didn’t have a name, just two crooked words ’Boss’.

Who knows whom he might be expecting?

Scratching his head, Huai Shi couldn’t help but smile.

For some reason, it felt less lonely.

Soon, he finally reached the customs window, raised his hand to hand over his documents to the inspector.

Behind the window, the inspector glanced at his documents, then looked up at him, nodded, stamped them, and let him pass.

”Welcome to Kyoto, sir.” he said, ”Wish you all the best.”

The border-crossing process was almost unbelievably smooth, without any inquiries, leaving Huai Shi somewhat startled: ”You’re not asking for my name?”

The inspector smiled.

”I know you.”

The stranger pointed to the newspaper beside him, on ”Tomorrow’s News”, with a smiling face on the headline so clear.

He said:

”—Your name is ’Huai Shi’.”
